    Default NO REFERENCES

I just received a notice from the Sheriff advising me to renew my permit. I looked at the online form on the Sherrif's web site. A lot of blanks had notations that the information was "required", but the section for listing references was not marked as "required." Has anybody submitted an application for a LTCF without listing references? What happened?

My understanding is that to renew you do not need to list references

I didn't need to here in Pittsburgh

Some district attorneys and sheriffs have stated that contacting references would be a violation as it is a disclosure of LTCF information. At list one county is under court order not to contact them, although they still require them.

Although the spot exists on the standard from from PSP, it is my understanding that it is not required by the statute.

To avoid disclosure violations, some counties have stopped asking, or have that area completely blacked out.

It depends on the sheriff and the people at the front desk. When I did my renewal in Bucks the application form had a space for my social security number and it clearly said "at least the last 4 digits". So I filled it out with the last four but as soon as I got to the counter the first thing they said was I needed to put my full social. This was in May when you were even lucky to get in and renew so instead of questioning anything I filled it out exactly how they wanted. I had my LTCF in hand 10 min later.

If you go in person with an application I would have your reference information in hand in case they ask for it. And if this is an online application I would just fill it out to avoid a hassle or delay. For now most of us just want our renewal ASAP. There are better times to talk about the letter of the law and if your rights are being violated.

I have listed county commissioners, but I do know two of the three. And more importantly, they know me.

Privacy arguments and sheriff's individual interpretations aside, I disagree that it is not required. The statute does not "require" that you put your address on the application either. Or your DL number, or your occupation.

    The statute mandates the application:
shall be on a form prescribed by the Pennsylvania State Police.
IMO, if the PSP puts a box for your address, it's required. Same with any other info, absent a clear court ruling striking it down at some point. There are only a very parts parts of the application specifically spelled out by the statute, mostly related to the reason for application and the attestation of the applicant in regards to their legal eligibility.
