Authorities probe fatal shooting, wounding at Greene Township state game lands shooting range

A 67-year-old Erie man was taken into police custody after one man was fatally shot and another man was wounded Tuesday afternoon at the Pennsylvania State Game Land 109 shooting range at 10679 Sampson Station Road in Greene Township, state police reported.

Authorities were called to the shooting range at 2:03 p.m. after receiving reports from bystanders of a shooting victim.

Police identified the victim as Robert Alan Eppley, 26 of North East.


Pennsylvania State Police investigate a shooting Tuesday at the State Game Land 109 shooting range on Sampson Station Road in Greene Township. Authorities reported that a male was fatally shot and another was wounded and taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment.
Police said a 28-year-old Erie man also was wounded in the incident. Police did not release the man's identity. He was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.

Eppley was shooting down range when he turned and shot the 28-year-old Erie man, police reported.

The 67-year-old Erie man observed the shooting and then shot Eppley multiple times, police reported. Eppley died at the scene.

Police took the 67-year-old man into custody. Police did not release his name, and the man had not been charged as of early Tuesday evening, police reported.

State police and the Erie County Coroner's Office are investigating the death.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission closed the gun range until further notice.
