Carbide 45-70 dies?
Does anyone know if rcbs makes carbide dies for the 45-70? I can't find any options but steel and I'd rather holdout for carbide if it is available.
Also am I right in assuming that I can't load the leverevolution cases with regular bullets? I read they are shortened to make oal with the Spitzer bullet.

Re: Carbide 45-70 dies?
Carbide only works on straight walled cases. 45-70 is a tapered case.

Re: Carbide 45-70 dies?
This is not always true. Carbide is tough to machine so straight walled cases are easiest but those cases are only for revolvers. All autoloaders I know of use tapered cases and most of them are offered in carbide. Dillon even offers some bottle neck rifle cartridges in carbide but at over $100 each I never looked into them.
45-70 is a very easy case to size so if you can't find carbide it is not that big of an issue. Just a little lube and a steel die work perfectly since the cases don't have to be lubed as well as bottleneck rifle cases.

Re: Carbide 45-70 dies?
I've been using the Lee 3 die set for about 30 years and there appears to be no need for carbide resizing dies if there is one that's even made. If I were to replace my dies at this point I'd buy the RCBS for the 45/70. I have RCBS for 45acp, 223 and 30 Carbine and they are a bit nicer than the Lee but the Lee 3 dies set is just fine. I prefer the RCBS case lube on the pad rather than the Lee case lube for resizing. I haven't tried the Hornady spray yet. I load for the Marlin 1895 using IMR3031 with 300gr semi jacketed hollow points and CCI large rifle primers keeping the pressures moderate and velocity around 1800-1900fps.

Re: Carbide 45-70 dies?
Dillion doesn't have 45/70 carbide die sets. They do sell the Redding dies from their site. Redding, RCBS, Lyman or Lee are all steel sets for the 45/70 and they are all adequate for the job. I have at least one set of each of those brands for various calibres. The crucial part about resizing the 45/70 is using a minimal but adequate amount of lubricant and that's why I like the RCBS lube you spread out on the pad. With the Lee lubricant it was dependent upon having some on your fingers while loading it into the resizing die. The Hornady spray may be the best solution but it may take some time to get any.
I use a single stage press for the 45/70 an I'm quite careful because it uses large quantities of powder in the case and I guarantee you don't go to the range and shoot this cartridge all day long and use boxes and boxes of ammo. After a 20 round box of ammo you're ready to put it back in the case for a while and shoot something else or go have a smoke and take a break.Corruption is the default behavior of government officials. Yes, I like RCBS too, but it is hard to beat the LEE collet crimp set up. If you clean the brass BEFORE resizing, standard steel dies will probably out live you.
