I'm thinking you'd have over $2K to make one "correct"

A data point for your reference: of the 2 Winchester Field Grade M1s I received last fall, one has ME 1+ and TE 2+, the other has ME 2+ and TE 2 readings. I think nowadays CMP re-manufactures all Garands with sewer pipe barrels (and ALL of rack-graded Garands) into "CMP special grade" by recycling their receivers and installing new Criterion barrels, so that even the field grade rifles they currently send out tend to have decent readings.
