Default Beware of emails scamming dog owners

I just received several emails about our dogs, naming them, and providing the owner's name (although they misspelled it once). Says we need to renew our annual dog licenses. Looks legit. Except it's probably not.

The site is " padoglicense.com ", and multiple news stories from 2019 claim that it's a foreign scam, aimed at collecting your cc data and stealing from you, and possibly committing identity theft. Plus, you don't get a real dog license.

This one from 2018 says the site is legit, but the 2019 stories say it's a scam, and their source is the owner of the site, so what possible reason would HE have to lie?:

The media contradict each other, so use your own judgment. I suspect that the state sells off lists of personal info, the way they've done with driver's license info. So a scammer could purchase a list of all licensed dogs and the names of their owners and their addresses, then send out scam emails. Or maybe it's legit after all, and the journalists got it wrong in 2019.

    Interesting.
In Allegheny county, you get the license through the county treasurer's department.
I would ignore anything about renewal that wasn't coming from the treasurer.

I would ignore that too actually, since we have the lifetime dog licenses.

State law gives the authority to require dog licenses to the Dept. Of Agriculture. Thr issuing agent for this is the County Treasurer.

I would be suspect of ANY source outside of those two offices unless a secure website link was provided by those offices.

Unlike the "uniform" process for LTCF across the state (yeah, right!), there is no uniform online process for dog licenses. I've seen that site, and my personal impression was it was like those "take our class for 34 state CCW" offerings.

It offers a service that isn't necessary, at a price. In the case of the dog licenses, the company will, for a fee, submit the paperwork to the right place and you get the license. Not necessary, but given the lack of technology employed by small county departments like the Treasurers Office, it gets a fair amount of business just by popping up when someone googles "get my pa dog license."

Northampton County lists this site (https://www.padoglicense.com/) on the county web page (https://www.northamptoncounty.org/FI...-LICENSES.aspx) if anyone wants to purchace online. I for one would rather purchase online rather than having to go to the reched city of easton to do it in person.

    Per the couny page.

State Law requires all dogs over 3 months of age to be licensed, owners of unlicensed dogs are subject to fines up to $300.00.
Licenses are valid for the county in which the owner resides.
For additional dog license information, please contact the Revenue Office at 610-829-6186, option 6

2021 Dog licenses may be purchased online, no application necessary ($2.00 convenience fee is collected by credit card processor)
To purchase an online dog license for 2021 (begins December 1, 2020), please click the link below:

    http://www.padoglicense.com/

Here is a link to the county website.

Lancaster County also lists that site to purchase a dog license online. https://co.lancaster.pa.us/589/Licenses-Permits
Clicking on the "Annual Pennsylvania Dog License" hyperlink takes you directly to the padoglicense.com website.

I've been using it for several years.

I just ignore the "license" requirement altogether.

The website that popped up late last year that was a scam was padoglicense.online and has since been taken down.

Bucks County offers a lifetime license.
