how far do you go to control your scent?
when hunting deer, how far do you go to control your scent?
A friend took me on my first ever hunt this year/and among other things, he really stressed scent control......for example, he hand washes all hunting clothes with scent control detergent and keeps them in sealed containers... but, when we pulled into the parking area at the SGL, guys were smoking cigarettes and slamming doors .. one guy pulled his diesel truck to about yards from the edge of the woods...., I was wondering if that was the norm or most hunters are like my buddy...

Re: how far do you go to control your scent?
I used to be obsessive about it, mostly during archery. I had some success but I cant point to my scent control regimen as the reason. Now I take basic precautions: my hunting clothes are kept separate from my daily wear and I only wash them in baking soda. I avoid petroleum fumes when traveling to my hunting spot and avoid sweating while walking to my stand. I pay more attention now to the wind direction, get into my stand early and climb high to dissipate my scent.

Re: how far do you go to control your scent?
pretty much what heatheroo said. my hunting gear gets washed in baking soda detergent with no scent, but during regular gun season it doesn't make a huge difference in my experience. If you're up in a tree and have a rifle that can be on point up to 100-150 yards, scent won't make or break you. during archery when you need to be within 30 yards, that's a game changer.

Deer are curious...I've had them come in to see what that sent is from my thermos.

I just try not to eat chili, baked beans or sauerkraut before climbing a tree.
I have been busted by deer after having passed gas.
Well, maybe that was a fluke.Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

Don't go out of my way, but do try to position myself so the wind will work in my favor.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

I pay no attention to "scent"....I don't think our ancestors did....and all of the very successful hunters I knew (going back almost 70 years) could be detected a long way off...I think that whatever you're hunting takes a sniff and figures "Whoa! What ever THAT is, it must be dead, so it's not a threat!
So, have that extra chili-dog and hunt like a cave man!!!

English Leather attracts the does and the bucks are suckers for Hai Karate.

Used to fill my cargo pockets or a small pack with apples. When I found a good spot , I'd throw them against surrounding trees. SPLAT!
Some say that's baiting , I say it's hiding my scent.
I've known guys who douse themselves with all kinda buck lure/doe piss stuff , then light up a cigarette every 10-15 mins!I don't speak English , I talk American!
