Smoking while deer hunting is bad. But not because of the smoke. Deep don't know or care about smoke. Its the smoker constantly moving his hands that is bad. Same with diesel or gas fumes. It doesn't register.

What they do smell the most is laundry detergent and scented deodorants since 99% are scented with a cheap industrial scent. I always used unscented detergent and deodorant (not just for hunting) and I can usually tell when my neighbor is doing the laundry. I can even tell when by daughters come home and do laundry at my house. Even after being washed with my unscented detergent I can smell their usual detergent in my drier. Once you become unaccustomed to cheap smells in almost everything for a while it becomes obvious.

Now what *isn't baiting* is eating most of an apple, then rubbing the rest of it on a few trees nearby. only leaves the scent, nothing for them to eat

I am mostly an archery hunter-not crossbow-and I pay very close attention to wind direction and use scent free soap, antiperspirants, and shampoo. I hang my hunting clothes outside after I take them off.
Unless you are hunting urban/suburban deer, the direction your scent is moving is one of the most important concerns in archery hunting. I have no faith in "cover" scents.

I guess since my friend is primarily a bow hunter, that is why he is more concerned about scent than the average rifle hunter.

Where I hunt, wood smoke is everywhere so you know my cover scent. When younger, I worked on my uncle's dairy farm. Smelling like a cow is a natural scent. As far as smoking, I have shot numerous deer while actively smoking, down to 15 yards. If you want a good cover, just rub old leaves and dirt on your clothes. It is not rocket surgery.

I used to worry about it until I seen how many giant bucks Dan Infalt and the guys on The hunting public kill doing absolutely nothing for scent control. Dan hunts in a tee shirt and jeans. I think scent loc is a gimmick. If you think how well a deer can smell I really don't think it's going to matter. Setup, knowing where deer are moving and wind direction is key. Maybe someday I'll figure that stuff out and start killing big bucks.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I've never understood the concern with wind direction. How do you know which direction the deer will be coming from?

If you know where they are bedding and feeding you have a good idea. Trails and rub lines give a good guess.
