    i also say both but...

to me, half the point of the AK over the AR is simplicity and the fact that AKs function well with neglect in mind...
an AR platform that fires 7.62x39 does nothing for me in that arena; in terms of the caliber, I prefer 7.62x39 for my given area,
mentioned before that in my area the idea of 200, 300, 400+ yd engagement is laughable...
it's not even 100yd, it's 50 yds and in, with concrete/ car doors/ etc as cover - makes the x39 and AK platform a winner for me personally.
but this is a somewhat extreme scenario - maybe not so, depends on the next year right?

now for on-the-go, you just can not beat the size/ weight/ efficiency of the 556 and some alternative AR-type platforms -
like for instance, my gen2 extar 556... it does not have a buffer-tube and operates slighty differently, to me it's more open to the neglect i was mentioning that you can't always get away with on DI ARs
and it's like 4lbs loaded! everyone should have one of these.
and even if a brace ban happened (who cares but IF) you can still fire it very effectively, can even fire it as an actual pistol bc there is zero muzzle flip with it...
that makes that platform/ caliber stay as my edc SHTF on-the-go go to.

Theres something about that with a folding triangle brace that just does it for me... lol

having shot both extensively, the best option is to have both.
I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but it's what I'll say. Buy whichever you think is more convenient for you now and ammo to go with (with ammo availability, etc in mind), then save up for the other.
The AK has a lot of strengths- relibaility, availability of cheap ammo (for now), a very good medium range round; while the AR has plenty of strengths of it's own- modular capability, lightweight, very accurate, and perhaps biggest for me- the 5.56 round is almost universally used by the US mil and LE, meaning if the big Applebee's employee dinner and all night margarita fest happens, you can 'resupply' it easier than you would with 762x39.

This is why - IMHO - the AR makes a better SHTF choice: "you can 'resupply' it easier than you would with 762x39. "

Would love an AK but I waited too long to get on the wagon. I just can't bring myself to pay $700+ for one.

Even worse, I had one I paid $350 for brand new, and I sold it to pay Bill's several years ago.
My biggest regret in terms of guns I've sold.

Like you, I just have a hard time shelling out that kind of cash for a clunky piece of wood and steel.
    Great rifles, sure, but...
