The 30/30 and 243 suggestions are great. I went 300BO as I put one together a few years ago. This is what I gave to my 11 year old daughter. I load subsonic and use a suppressor, and recoil is none existent and it's so quiet. I find the 300BO to be the perfect caliber for a small framed person for PA Whitetail.

Why fuck around with BB guns?

    For me:

1). 7 years old or so, I got a Browning .22 lever rifle.

    2). 10 years old I got a Winchester 30-30 Trapper carbine (lever).

    3). 13 years old I got a Winchester .270 bolt action.

Get a good one, it will work well as a starter, and again when they get much closer to the finish line. These are also good old person's calibers for when that 30-06 or magnum gets to be a bit much and not as much fun to shoot...

Appreciate all the input here. I was leaning towards .243 when I wrote this, and will probably stick that way after reading this. Problem now is actually finding a rifle (and the ammo), but I have time at least.

Cabelas is running a sale on the Savage Axis.. I think it's $250 after rebate (multiple calibers including 243)

Don't buy a lever action with a hammer you have to decock for a kid. It's a terrible idea. Their fingers aren't strong enough and it becomesa safety issue. I got a Marlin youth model bolt action in .243. It was under $300 bucks on Buds guns. Nice trigger and accurate. Throw a slip on recoil pad and I can shoot it.

Agreed, while I enjoy a lever action I definitely am getting him a bolt. He's already gotten used to my Savage .22LR bolt action. He'll grow up quick enough to start venturing into different actions ;-)

Good point. My son could run his savage rascal bolt action when he was 7. A hammer would’ve been tough.

Nothing at all wrong with a .243, or even a 6.5 Creedmoor. For what it's worth, my wife shoots a Browning Micro Midas. It's a sweet little rifle for a kid or smaller adult. Browning offers a deal where you can get a full sized stock for 50% off or something like that.
