    Default Source for inert/dummy ammo?

I want to practice some malfunction clearing and would like to do it with dummy rounds mixed into my live rounds (obviously at the range).

So... Does anybody have a source for cartridges that have no powder/primer or snap caps/dry fire cartridges that are so cheap i can afford to lose them if they eject across the firing line or just get lost?

Traditional snap caps are just too expensive to lose. Those goofy orange plastic cartridges get chewed up pretty quickly and often have flashing on them that makes them more of a liability than a training tool.

Any sources? Any hand loaders want to sell me 25-50 rounds without powder and primers? They don't need to be particularly clean nor have the spent primer pulled. Just dimensionally 9mm.

Edit - for clarification - needs to be low cost. Needs to be able to chamber.

I did the same thing once. Made up some dummy rounds and spray painted them red to keep them separate. When I would loaded a mag I would put one dummy round with the rest of the bullets then load them into the mag without looking. Besides clear practice you will instantly know if you are flinching. When the hammer falls and your sights are still steady on the target you are doing good. Unfortunately that is not always the case.

A reloader will make them for you. Drill a hole through the case side so you know the inert rounds.

If ou have someone make them see if they'll put a ball bearing or chunk of steel in the case, you can then use a magnet to pick them up or aid in separating them from spent brass

You can darken brass with cold blue to help keep them separate.

So expensive. They work for sure. But you'll be upset if they get lost or roll past the firing line.

Good idea. I never would have tried cold blue on them.

Cool idea. But I'd think that would also add a bunch of weight. I'll keep track of them. My training ammo and carry ammo stay pretty well separated.

I've seen some online like that. Not much of a concern for me currently.

You could also stop by your local garage that still cuts drums, maybe rotors, and use the steel shavings. Just a small amount in a "dummy" round will react to a magnet.

I'm sorry, I'm late to this party. Did you ever get someone to make you the dummy rounds you were looking for?
