Re: My new SKS
I soaked all my metal in paint thinner/mineral spirits.
I soaked my stock in it too.
It looked "whitish" after wiping it off. Probably from taking the finish off the wood.
I then wiped it down with Ballistol and it looked great.
Nobody ever questioned me about it. Nobody could tell there was anything different about it.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: My new SKS
I had no idea what to do with the stock.
I read all the dumb shit like "put it in a tray and leave it on your dashboard in the sun", but figured the paint thinner would be faster. It was. LOL
Looked like hell and I thought I ruined it.
My plan was to coat all metal with Ballistol as I reassembled it.
Knowing the million uses for the stuff, I took a rag and wiped it onto the stock.
Just like magic the wood color came back.
Sort of like wiping Old English liquid furniture polish on your furniture.
It didn't make it shine, but the COLOR came back to life.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Be careful with the cosmoline. It soaks into your skin and gets into your blood. Next thing you know you have milsurpitis. There is no cure and the medicine is very expensive. And getting scarce.

My 35yr old Harbor Freight recirculating parts cleaning bin is filled with plain ol' mineral spirits. $29/5gal. Works just fine on cosmo.

Re: My new SKS
Oh, I know about the FAL, and that's another one I wouldn't mind having, for its historical significance, and for it just being a fine rifle. It's just lower on my list because I found out about it a lot later, after the other rifles had already made their way to "legendary" status in my videogame-soaked brain.
One thing I did come across recently too: Apparently Norinco makes an M14 called the M305. From what I hear it's garbage compared to an actual M1A/M14, but what intrigued me the most about it is the fact that they also make a version that fires 7.62x39 and runs AK-47 magazines. Since I know it can't really handle 7.62 NATO, I'm really curious to see how it would fare with an intermediate cartridge. But it really doesn't matter unless I'm gonna move to Canada anyway.

Re: My new SKS
From my experience with a Norinco shotgun, critical parts are of low quality, causing poor or even dangerous results, and by the time you replace them you were better off buying the more expensive gun from the start.
