And a better picture of the crack in the original stock that shows it actually going the whole way thru.

Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.

Re: My new SKS
I have three of them in wrapping that are just like that in my basement now. I’ve cleaned off and repaired more SKS’s and Mosin Nagants then I can remember and I can say I’m officially done with cosmoline at this point in my life.
Like EM said take apart the bolt and removing the FP and make sure that channel is cleaned out. You can also drop it in a pot of boiling water then remove it from the heat and if you see a lot cosmo bubbles coming up then you defiantly have a dirty FP channel.
Good luck with the rifle.

Re: My new SKS
Gasoline cuts cosmoline.
And gas will evaporate afterwards.
Or if your are not in a city, it burns well.
It burns well even in a city, but you may attract unwanted attention.
Anyway, YAHOO. (You always have other options)American by BIRTH, Infidel by CHOICE

Haha, I wouldn't be caught dead in the city if I can help it.

Re: My new SKS
Cosmoline is formulated so soldier(s) in the field can deal with it with what solvent is at hand. That's generally gasoline and kerosene/fuel oil.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

The after picture looks good! Congrats.
Cosmoline is a pain... But guess what... It's a simple solution and works well.

Re: My new SKS
Each time I read about these SKSs I quietly cry as I remember when Cabelas had these packed in cosmoline and came with the cleaning/oil kit for a hefty $99 bucks, I had bought 4 of them and then when Obama took office I sold all but 1 for $250 or so each still packed,
I cry that I didn't buy the wooden cases of them at the time, But I didn't have the funds to do so,
Also the AKs at $249 still haunt me,
Enjoy what you have and in a. couple years it will be quite the deal!
Great reliable gun you have there!
