Year old...NY homeowner shoots 2 invaders, goes to jail
This story appeared in an e-mail gun thread today. In April 2019 A 64-year-old man shot and killed two intruding burglars. He lived in a house he inherited from his parents. The handgun he used was registered to his deceased father. NY requires a handgun be registered. The shooter claimed he found the gun among the effects and forgot or didn't get around to updating the registration.
In August 2019, four months later, the charges were dropped...via his attorney negotiating with the DA apparently requiring numerou$ meeting$.
I would think that, if charges can be dropped, they can also be declined...which, in this case, would have served justice.
Now the DA has established precedent. I understand it is not legal precedent stemming from a judicial decision and thus does not constrain, but it may have an influence upon a jury, if it can be allowed. It's just totally poor application of the law, in my opinion.
This kind of injustice alarms me. There are too many incidents where people use guns in morally appropriate manner and are treated as criminals. Law enforcement and law writers are violating the intent of the 2nd amendment and honest citizens are literally paying for it.There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Re: Year old...NY homeowner shoots 2 invaders, goes to jail
Good advice, but overall pretty useless in the People's Republic of New York. The 7 million upstate resident are out weighed by the 12 million NYC Metro area voters. Beyond that New York requires more than mere "registration" of a handgun. In order to legally own or merely "possess" a handgun one must have a New York State Pistol license in NYC, Suffolk County and IIRC Rochester, special endorsements by the municipality are required if not an actual licensed issued by them.

You also need a permit to possess a long gun in the NYC environs.
Know your audience. Don't try to sell a Prius at a Monster Truck Rally.
