New Panthers' war on whites

Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. Minister King Samir Shabazz wears his on his forehead. Right between the eyes.
"If you want to stop the revolution, that's what you got to hit," Shabazz said, pointing to the target tattooed onto his forehead. "I fight my oppressor, and I give him the target."
Shabazz is chairman of the New Black Panther Party's Philadelphia chapter. In black beret atop dreadlocks and a black military uniform, he spends most weekdays near City Hall condemning "crackers" and exhorting black passers-by to rise up against their "slavemasters" - and to give him $2 for the party's semi-annual newspaper.
He is one of the most recognizable black militants in a city known, since the days of MOVE, for its vocal black-extremism community.
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which monitors hate activity globally, listed the New Black Panther Party as among the most active and tough-talking of black-separatist groups.
Black Hebrews also have grown increasingly active in recent years, according to the SPLC, especially in Philadelphia, where robed street preachers shout out their beliefs daily near City Hall, the Convention Center, Germantown Avenue and other heavily trafficked areas.
Followers of the movement claim that African-Americans are God's true chosen people because they, not the people traditionally known as Jews, are the real descendants of the biblical Hebrews.
Their views, while often just as extreme, tend to be couched in religious rhetoric about "Edomites" (the descendants of Esau) and such terms that barely slow the stride of most passers-by.
But Shabazz is more blunt in his views:
* On whites: "I'm about the total destruction of white people. I'm about the total liberation of black people. I hate white people. I hate my enemy. . . ."
* On Jews: "I don't care how much they try to promote the Jewish Holocaust. The African people have suffered a hell of a cost. . . . "
* On Barack Obama and voting: "He's a puppet on a string. I don't support no black man running for white politics. I will not vote for who will be the next slavemaster." Besides, he added, Obama is "a Negro who doesn't even support reparations for black people in America."
* On white supremacists: "They're sissies; they want to put their feelings on a flier. Well, come into the black neighborhood with that rhetoric and we will show you what a strong awakened black man looks like."
* On the Phillies: "They can kiss my ass. The Phillies are not doing nothing for our 'hoods."
Shabazz, who also considers himself a Black Hebrew, said that his beliefs are rooted in high school, where lessons about slavery led to an "awakening."
He doesn't like to talk about himself. He won't divulge his real name, which he shed years ago because it was a "slave name that still had an umbilical cord on it."
He lives "wherever black people is, that's where I live."
He's 38 and has children, but he won't say how many or provide any more details about his personal life, partly for security reasons but also because this reporter is a "cracker."
He listens to "revolutionary, cracker-killing hip-hop" on his headphones and says things like: "I'll get black to you on that."
And he says that he never worries what response his violent rhetoric might provoke in listeners.
"The only thing the cracker understands is violence," said Shabazz, whose face also bears the tattoos "Freedom," "BPG" (Black Power Gang) and "NBPP" (New Black Panther Party). "The only thing the cracker understands is gunpowder.
"You got to take violence to violence." *

Actually they've been around for several years now. They were originally an off-shoot of Farrakahn's group, one of his bodyguards I beleive, and they espouse violent over throw of anything and everything to do with white America. They are constantly spouting about how they're gonna kill all the crackers and I even read somewhere that certain government agencies believe them to be in collusion with some of the other black separatist groups that have "camps" in various areas in NEPA and parts of NYS and other areas around the country. These people could, possibly, get very ugly, but for the most part they are more like the KKK than anything else. Kind of funny to me.

Unblurred face of 'new' skinheads

Unlike other members of the Keystone State Skinheads, Keith Carney's face isn't blurred in online photographs and his name isn't concealed to hide his identity.
He is, in many cases, the face of the KSS - this man of just 26 who is living and practicing his "white nationalist" philosophy in Northeast Philadelphia.

"White nationalist" instead of "white supremacist," he said, because the KSS is attempting to move from a social club - the Keystone State Skinheads - to a "militant political organization" - Keystone United.

The name change suggests the kinder, gentler image that some white-supremacist organizations are chasing in an attempt to connect to mainstream culture.

"We don't see ourselves as superior," Carney said, in a recent interview, "and we don't promote violence. You can't intimidate people into thinking the way you do."

Despite Carney's talk of nonviolence, he has a lengthy criminal record that includes a 2004 conviction for ethnic intimidation and simple assault in Lackawanna County, for which he was sentenced to one to three years in prison.

Among Carney's many cases that have moved through the court system is the May 2007 Philadelphia beating of a man who himself was a KSS affiliate, the 2003 assault of a black man in Scranton and the posting of white-supremacy stickers on Philadelphia war memorials.

Despite hasty actions in his past, today Carney is a man of carefully chosen words. In conversation, he never invokes racial epithets, and even goes so far as to call the tactics of other white-supremacy organizations, like the Ku Klux Klan, "goofy."

But his mild language masks a disturbing belief among KSS members that all of America's woes are a result of "the failed multicultural experiment we live in."

"The socialist agenda, unrestricted capitalism and Zionist policies in the Middle East have increased crime and poverty," Carney said. "The accomplishments of our ancestors [white people] are being minimized by Marxist/socialist groups, the biased media and schools."

Carney, who joined the KSS shortly after it was founded in 2001 , said that he came to his beliefs not through his parents but through his experience as a white man in Philadelphia.

"People get this back-woods, ignorant stereotype, but that's not who we are," he said. "I'm from Philly and I've dealt with this [multiculturalism] firsthand. I see the effect it has on both sides of the fence and it's not good."

While Carney didn't say what firsthand experiences led him to the KSS, he repeatedly espoused the idea that the KSS is just "speaking about what people are afraid to talk about outside of their own homes."

Carney said that he believes that people naturally "segregate" themselves into groups, and that while certain subsectors of the white population have a right to socialize, such as the Irish or Italians, they cannot organize as "European-Americans" as a whole.

"It's racist to acknowledge there even is a white community," he said. "There's nothing wrong with a black community, a Hispanic community or Chinatown.

"We just want fair and equal treatment."

So, in an ironic twist, this white- supremacy group that discriminates against others believes that in some cases, it and its members are themselves victims of discrimination.

"We don't want to take the victim's stance, but we are put under a microscope compared to other groups," Carney said. "Black groups can scream obscenities on Market Street, but we can't gather peacefully?

"It's perfectly acceptable to bash white people," he said. "The race card has gone pretty far, and white people need to stand up and say that they're not going to accept these things."

Carney, who believes that a "race war" has been going on in this country for decades, doesn't see it ending anytime soon.

"We're definitely not going away," he said. "And, obviously, with the atmosphere in the country, we're not going to slow down."*
