I got some shooting bags and the instructions say to use kitty litter vs sand because the sand is heavier and would be hard on the seams. Any thoughts on this?

I’ve had kitty litter in one bag for almost a decade now. Bag and seems are fine and it doesn’t work it’s way out. Never used sand and I can’t remember why I went with kitty litter to begin with. Probably for the same reason your asking.

Kitty litter and sand are trade-offs. Sand tends to better hold the shape when you kinda chop a groove into the bag with the edge of your hand. Kitty litter is great for lugging to that sniping spot when varminting.

I have a hoppes expert bench rest, got it 30 years ago, has an adjustable front with tripod and a rear sandbag made from leather and sand. Has worked for me. It's had a lot of range time at Ft Dix and Ft Drum.

I have heard similar with securing the rifle to the point it can't move at all. It's hard on components when all ability to recoil is removed. I don't strap the rifle down in the front and I won't load the sled to the point it won't move. I was quite happy with it with no weights shooting 30-06. It moved some and I had to reset after each shot but I could have shot all day with no discomfort. I think it's a matter of moderating recoil versus eliminating it.

I know there are a lot of tales of stock damage with people that put the buttstock against a tree and fired.

I mostly use the wood blocks with turf carpet on them supplied by the range, or my range bag. Several of my guns get 3/8" groups so I never tried anything better.
