Like others have said, a 9mm PCC especially in blowback format is going to have very similar recoil, weight and size to a properly tuned* 5.56 rifle/pistol.

I'm curious to know why you think she can't handle an AR because of her size? It's a relatively lightweight platform and with a collapsible stock or brace, she can dial in her length of pull correctly.

*Properly tuned: a correct size gas port for the barrel length and gas system of the firearm, not an oversized gas port to have a greater margin of error for operation at the expense of being over-gassed. Besides quality control, this is where spending more $ on an AR or upper actually gives a tangible benefit. You WILL have an easier time keeping your dot on target with a properly tuned AR compared to a more budget option. Times are tough with inventory, but try to find a Geissele Super Duty 11.5" upper and build an AR pistol with it. Put in an H2 buffer, get an SBA3 brace and a micro red dot and I almost guarantee she will love it and be extremely proficient from 0 to 200 yds. An 11.5" is light and compact and the proper tuning of the Geissele upper makes it softer than many AR rifles and PCCs. I'm sure there are other nicely tuned 11.5" uppers but I know the Geissele is, but admittedly it's not the lightest 11.5" out there.

Overall I think an AR pistol in 5.56 is the best all around option. Better range and energy than a 9mm, similar or less recoil and lightweight and handy.

BTW, shooting outdoors with both foam plugs and ear muffs, flash hider and not a muzzle brake is going to present the most pleasing experience for a timid shooter. The 5.56 is all bark and no bite (behind the muzzle of course).

She does like shooting her S&W 686 (Revolver) but I feel against SHTF scenario it's just not enough. Please advise thoughts or options....

You live close to me. I have an ar9 you and your wife are welcome to shoot at ready aim fire so long as you feed it.

I disagree about the recoil being similar. I have a 10oz buffer in my ar9 and could shoot it all day long. It isn't no recoil, but it is much softer shooting than a carbine length ar15.

    Extar EP9?

It's like a 9mm AR pistol for a fraction of the price.

I have one in 10MM---I absolutely love it but it's too heavy for her.

Is this what you all are talking about? I have 2 AR-15's so would this drop in?

No. I mean an Extar EP9.

    That's just a 7.5" 5 56 upper.
You can't use that on a carbine lower unless you get paperwork for an SBR.

    ^^^This^^^

Light, very low recoil, relatively low noise, .30 carbine is no slouch and there are defensive rounds available.

I was going to suggest the m1 carbine too. It's a under rated carbine with little to no recoil. However their prices today are ridiculous.
