Dragons breath vs. clean barrel

As an alternative to dragon's breath, I make steel wool shells every fall when I do my night shoots. Take birdshot, cut off the end of the shell and dump the contents, put a small piece of steel wool in with the powder behind the wad. I tried it with 0000 and I think the other one I have is 0. The 0000 is easier to work with but I didn't notice any difference in the way they burn up. This is entirely done for amusement though. I've seen plenty of examples of poor penetration and minimal damage on targets once you get past around 7 yards with birdshot so I would really only use buckshot or slugs for anything more serious than stripping paint off my steel targets or shooting clays.

I wouldnt recommend bird beyond 7 either.
But apocalypse, shooting anything that comes through the door. Bird has that cheap and abundant factor. My shotgun right now is loaded up with 00buck and a strip of slugs hangs from it for reload.

Flares also may not have the range. We've developed a defense plan for our small development, and "walls of fire" play a part.

Flares shoot farther than dragons breath. Hell if you want range 3 sparklers taped to an arrow has longer range than either flares or dragons breath.

Having shot plenty of dragons breath it is about as useful as throwing firecrackers in a self defense situation. I'd rather remotely fire fireworks mortars at the incoming marauders as a distraction while shooting from a different vantage point.

Lol this is why I bought 2 cases or bird shot at the beginning of covid when there were no buck or slugs to be found.

Bird bombs will blow a fat hole through someone and just about fully transfers the energy to target.

In virtually any circumstance a home built or jury rigged substitute could work, and may even work better.
However there's a difference between the two, and I'll take purpose built if I have the option.

A 1oz #8 trapload will blow a clean quarter sized hole through 1/2" sheetrock, fiberglass insulation, two pieces of 5/8" plywood and a piece of vinyl siding at about two yards.
