AKS-74U over gassing problem

I got a Title II Poly-Tech AKS-74U built on a Bulgarian parts kit. It is chambered in 5.45 but was originally a .223/5.56 gun. Here’s the skinny. I have shot it twice in two years. Both times at or about a mag or two I had case head separation. It was a bitch to get out and I mean a bitch. I happen to get the first time on video. The chances of this happening are astronomical. After learning that Poly-Techs originally had gassing issues I had my light bulb moment. I would be looking for a competent gunsmith that could take on said project that is able to have transferred a MG. I would like to keep it in state to save the ATF hassle but beggars can’t be choosers at this point. Any help to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Case head separation wouldn't be caused by the gas system.

Most likely a headspace issue. If you could find someone close to you who builds AK's and had 5.45 gauges they could check it. Or even loan you the gauges to check maybe.

Headspace. Especially suspect due to the conversion and parts assembly history.

I agree with the others regarding the case head separation. Get a no go gauge and check the head space for yourself.

Regarding any over gassing check out the KNS adjustable gas piston. It does wonders on tuning AK’s.

Just get a no go and a field. The go is only useful if installing a new barrel

Finally got my go no go gages. Placed the no go in the chamber and gun went into battery. I believe I have solved the problem. Now I just need a gunsmith the rectify the issue. Thanks guys.

Well I’m glad you found the issue but it sucks to have that particular issue. I don’t know of any smiths in PA that can deal with it for you. Outside of PA there’s Definitive arms who are AK builders and Smiths, they also deal with NFA items as well.

Weld metal to the rear of the bolt lugs, then dress them down to correct headspace. Calls for correct metal rod, heat-treating, et cetera. Probably makes it not worth it. Sell it to Hollywood as a prop gun.
