Turning 50 in December ...green light on firearm purchase

So basically I got the green light from the Mrs to spend up to 2k on a firearm for my 50th birthday ...we were supposed to go to Budapest but COVID killed that plan. I need a K98 Mauser for the final piece in my WW 2 collection but I am open to suggestions on any alternatives ...just a few caveats ...no 1911’s , no AR’s all other options are open , so what would you get ? I realize now isn’t the best time for a firearm purchase but what the hell.

If you don*t have one, then an M1 Garand in the best condition you can afford. If you have an M1 Garand, then get the Mauser K98. Aside from those rifles, any high(er) end *tactical* rifle. ARs are fun, but I still want to get a Springfield M1A.

I don't understand your post. You said, "I need a K98 Mauser for the final piece in my WW 2 collection", kinda saying you have everything else in the category. So, how does one go from that to looking for alternatives to onliest piece you need?

Anyhoo....I have come to very much admire my Mosin Nagant M44. The stock is beautiful, the bluing pleasing, and the bolt polishes up like chrome. The overall length is unobtrusive. It is fun to shoot. The guys on the range double their hearing protection. If you don't have one.

Welcome to the 50+ club. I'm a recent entrant myself.

Personally, my #1 wish list item is a nice pistol-caliber carbine. But that's just me, and probably doesn't merit $2K.

If someone forced $2K down my throat and forced me to use it on a firearm, I'd likely go for a Kimber 1911... But that violates your rules.

I know someone who has a K98 Mauser 1939 42 that she's looking to sell. From the pics she sent me, it looks to be in pretty good condition.

These things are great, I personally don't own one but know someone that does. When we have cookouts, parties during the holidays or championship seasons (it doesn't get much use being in SEPA) it gets lit a few times and pardon the pun it's a real blast. After the third or fourth time the police come around and ask us to keep it down. That's after they see it lit off.

Down side is black powder is hard to get and expensive. I think the one shown is bigger than the one I've been around, but if you have 2k to buy a toy, you can have some fun with this.

It also keeps unwanted neighbors away.
