Re: Cleaned some guns today - my random thoughts
Zachomega I wouldn't over work the screws on any gun, especially a revolver.
Is it common knowledge that solvents need time to work?
Slopping hoppies number 9 down the warm bore at the range is a good idea?
Bronze brushes get eaten by bore cleaners and rinsing them off makes them last longer?
Carbon rings on a revolver doesn't mean it's not clean? Scrubbing them off can be harmful?
Lead residue from shooting and cleaning is harmful and exposure should be minimized. Wash your hands, don't eat or smoke. The Gun is the Badge of a Free Man

Re: Cleaned some guns today - my random thoughts
I agree that overworking a screw can be bad if you use gorilla strength. I snug the screw when I put it back in and always make sure the bit I'm using fits perfectly so as not to scratch the frame or damage the head. But even if I did, I'd just replace the screw as normal wear and tear.
I hope it is common knowledge that solvents need time to work.
I'm going to assume that the warm barrel hoppes comment is directed for somebody else. But given that ultrasonic cleaners often have a warming feature, i don't know that it would hurt anything. However, i clean my guns after they are cooled down.
Bronze brushes can definitely be eaten by solvents. But since they cost practically nothing, just have a few on hand.
I've never heard that carbon rings on a revolver should be left on it. If it is truly carbon, it doesn't belong there. And given that bronze is softer than steel, i can't see how you would harm the revolver by scrubbing it with the brush.
Or better yet, wear nitrile gloves while you clean. The solvents aren't good for you either.

Re: Cleaned some guns today - my random thoughts
This thread and a few FTEs reminded me its time to clean a few rim fires. Ruger MKii is at least 1000 rounds and 6-7 years since the last one with minimal issues, so it's time.

I've run my Ruger mark iii through 500 round sessions before. Those damn speed loaders make it too easy.
My 10/22 started hiccuping today though a few hundred rounds in. To be fair, i think it is still breaking in. I don't think i even have 1000 rounds into it yet.
