Default LTCF Holder With Others Firearms In Car

Hello, everyone! I’d love some direction on this situation, thanks in advance to anyone helping me out.

My brother in law has a valid LTCF, I am still waiting for mine from the sheriff (no reason to be waiting other than they’re backed up). We are going to a family members cabin for target practice that is about 4 hours away, and I’m wondering if my firearms (two pistols) and myself are covered under his LTCF if he’s driving a car he owns.

Neither of us are looking to carry loaded firearms in the car, they’d be unloaded and in cases in the trunk with empty mags/ammo in the backseat. My main concern is that we are legally allowed to stop for gas/restroom (because the driver/owner of the vehicle holds a LTCF), or if we’d be subject to going straight to target practice and home since I don’t have my LTCF yet.

    Appreciate any help. Thank you!

As long as none of them are loaded or concealed on YOUR person while in the vehicle , you're good to go.

I think you're good for two reasons. One, you are going to a location for target practice which is an exception to "firearms not to be carried without a license".

Any persons engaged in target shooting with a firearm, if such persons are at or are going to or from their places of assembly or target practice and if, while going to or from their places of assembly or target practice, the firearm is not loaded.
It would be a hard sell that stopping for gas/restroom would put you outside of that exception.

Two, a LTCF holder can legally borrow a handgun. So besides the above, your brother in law could be borrowing yours for the trip. The exception to prohibition of lending firearms is:

The person who receives the firearm is licensed to carry a firearm under section 6109 (relating to licenses).
All this is in the PA Uniform Firearms Act found at: https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs...hoice=suppress

No, we are not, but that is a fantastic question to ask.

I really appreciate all of the responses, thanks so much! Sheriffs office called this morning and had my LTCF approved, just picked it up. No worries now

I disagree. If you dig around, you can find warnings about such stops even on the sites of attorneys that aren't know as being skilled in firearms law. People HAVE been charged.

In the OPs case, I believe the LTCF holder being along solves this issue, but for non-licensees, it is VERY clear that the exception applies only when traveling DIRECTLY TO AND FROM the exempted locations.
