    Default Shelf stable vices

By vices I mean booze, liquor and tobacco so no need for the easy jab of a bench vice comment. Anyone have a couple of the before mentioned items set aside as a barter item? I don't smoke and rarely drink so it would just sit with no risk of being used. But I imagine a couple bottles of cheap vodka or whiskey and a pack or two of smokes might go a long way. But what's the shelf life like? Would I be good to set them aside as a "Just in case thing" or do cigarettes and chew go bad? Obviously the booze should keep as long as it's temperature controlled and not opened. Right?

If you're trading cigarettes, why do you care if they go bad? Someone that is desperate for a fix isn't going to care if they're stale.

Good point. When they get the itch, a smoke is a smoke, right? As long as it's dry enough to light.

Cigarettes definitely can go bad. No idea of the time frame.

Liquor doesn't exactly go bad. But over time, the actual alcohol can evaporate out of the bottle. Not typically a problem that most people would ever experience. Plenty of basement bars see limited use with no real issue.

They are in the market to sell decanters, but their data backs up what my father (liquor salesman) has told me on numerous occasions.

How long are you looking to store it? I'm not going to say your plan is bad. But personally, I'd stay away from cheap anything and get something that in a worst case scenario, I'd actually enjoy. If you are planning to barter, a bottle of Jack Daniels goes a lot further than a bottle of Jacquin's. Think of it as somebody offering you Wolf steel case or federal American eagle. You don't need to buy top shelf. But the difference in appeal and taste is huge for just a few more dollars.

    Vise. It's bench vise.

My shelf stable vice is wine. I'm supplied to make mass quantities. Bottled wine stored on their side to keep the cork wet last a long time and the flavor improves over time too.

Vodka and whiskey will keep quite well. Booze, and cigs will be good baster items to be sure.

I'm waiting for Berncly to chime in on his counter stable vices.

Good catch. Me no brain tonight.

So maybe grab a bottle of Jack, a mid shelf bottle of vodka and wine that's not sold by the gallon? Maybe from a local winery to support them? And store it on the side as mentioned.

Plus, you'll always have a last minute gift if somebody is having a party.

Yep, get wine with a cork and heat shrink seal, should last a long time. Worst case scenario it turns to vinegar and use it for preserving other things I guess.
