    Default Transportation of Firearms Question

When I transport a pistol in my car, I know I have to keep the magazines unloaded from the pistol, but do they have to be in a separate container as well? I currently keep my pistol in a metal lock box with two empty magazines next to it. Is it legal to just put the box in my trunk?

I have a Carry Permit if it makes any difference, though I doubt it does.

And to be clear, I'm talking about situations where I'm transporting it un-holstered.

If you have a LTCF you can transport the handgun any way you want. Holstered or not you are covered by your LTCF. No need to break down the weapon to transport it.

Really? Not that I would even consider doing this, but I could transport a loaded pistol in my trunk?

I could have sworn I heard the contrary, but it's good to now know the truth if I was mistaken.

If you have a LTCF you could carry a handgun in your trunk, but why? It should be on your person.

Without the LTCF you cannot transport any firearm in your vehicle unless you are going to or from the range and several other exceptions. Riding around town is NOT allowed.

Just to clarify Steves post, he is referring to the definition of firearm that only defines handguns and short barreled rifles and shotguns as firearms. You can absolutely transport rifles and shotguns in a vehicle (unloaded) without a ltcf and without falling under one of the exceptions, it's handguns that will get you in trouble.

Well the reason I'm transporting it in my trunk is that I live on a college campus and store my pistol at the University Police Station, as is required by our on-campus living agreement. We also aren't allowed to holster firearms on campus, so I need to transport it to the shooting range in my trunk.

Just to clear things up. The major point of this post was, "can magazines be stored in the same container as the gun itself when being transported in a trunk?"

On your clarified post, yes............if you have a LTCF everything can be together in the same container in the trunk.

To properly safeguard the firearm it should be on you. If you have the permit, holster it as soon as you get off campus and put it back in the trunk right before you come back. If you store it in a belt pouch or one of those belt pack CC setups you can transfer it in a parking lot without anyone knowing what it is.

Someone told me that a FFL holder does not need a LTCF in PA and can carry loaded same as someone that has a LTCF, of course if that's true it would be handy to have a copy of your FFL and a copy of the law allowing it, if it is true does anyone know the law that allowes it.
