I'm looking to build a big bore ar.
I was thinking I wanted 458 socom, but now I'm considering 50 Beowulf. Has anyone built either one, or maybe both? What would you change if you could do it over again?

Re: I'm looking to build a big bore ar.
We have both 458 SOCOM and 50 Beowulf in our inventory, as well as a 450 Bushmaster, and I prefer the 50 Beowulf.

450 Bushmaster: SAAMI spec, lots of commercial ammo available
Some issues with AR15 mags
Reloadable with common 45cal pistol projectiles, but not always available in heavier weights
458 socom: No SAAMI, not many commercial loads
Works great in AR15 mags
Reloadable with common 45/70 projectiles in wide range of weights
50 beo: No SAAMI, not many commercial loads
Some issues with AR15 mags
Reloadable, not sure about availability of projectiles..
Those were major Pros/Cons I looked at. I ended up with the 458 Socom for the Mags and because I reload.. YMMV

Re: I'm looking to build a big bore ar.
What are you guys using for muzzle devices? And the 458 and 50 are both limited to 10 rd with ar30 rounders, has anyone tried the surefire 60 mags or the d60 drums?. I know the 450 can hold a few extras. Also, what barrel lengths are you running?

My shoulder and wallet are sore enough shooting 10rnds from a mag, I haven*t gone looking for more pain **
I just grabbed a complete BCA side-charge upper with flash hider because I wanted to test the water. It was inexpensive and sufficient to hit the fun factor, but I never had any concrete plans for it beyond blowing up fruit and knocking the AR500 plates off the chains.. **

How is the side charging versus the typical rear charging? I have considered getting a BCA side charger, but have not actually seen one in use.Illegitimus non carborundum est

Not much difference operationally. I always wanted a side-charge also and found this was the opportunity. I wish some of my other ARs with
large, long scopes had side charge, the rear charge is sometimes difficult to pull or clear with the scope in the way.

If you gotta do big bore, don’t play a round...take a look at the 45 Raptor. AR10 platform. It puts the others to shame!

I like the .450 Bushmaster you might want to look at it too when thinking about a big bore AR it's a great caliber.

Re: I'm looking to build a big bore ar.
The 45 raptor is bad ass but for now i have an empty ar15 lower. I'm pretty sure I'm settled on the 50 Beowulf. I get it kicks like a 11 ga. I don't intend to shoot it over 100 yards. That being said, I'm trying to see if there's a big difference in POI between a 10" and 16" barrel. Under 100 yards, it's a devastating round no mater what!
