Freezer candidates for hunt season 2020 /21
I started doing some things to get ready for the upcoming hunting season.
I zeroed my 30-30 today using a Speer DeepCurl bullet that Speer told me shouldn't be used with my choice of powder (IMR4350).
A few days ago I shot that bullet into some water jugs and got over double the diameter in expansion. The load stays.
For the past 30 years, I've been trying to work a load for my Remington pump 30.06 using 150 grain bullets. 1 1/2" at 100 was the best I ever got and it's adequate for deer in PA. Since the pumpgun has a 1:10 twist, I decided to try a 180 grain bullet. I tried 4 bullets and found a Barnes TTSX over IMR 4064 gave me a half minute of angle at 100. Today it was a 3/4" group but I rezeroed the rifle for that load.
I've had 3 trail cams out for about 2 weeks now and had 3 young small racked buck behind my house.
This morning, I was probably loading my car to do another range day when this guy stopped by.
I'll invite him to my 2B backyard party on Sept 19th. Hope he makes it.

Next month, I'll remove the lag screws that support my tree stand, inspect and reinstall them or change them if needed.
I haven't shot my crossbow yet so that's still upcoming.
I also got a cow elk tag for Wyoming so have a load worked up for my Savage .300 winmag gun bash rifle. Leupold just contacted me that the the custom dial for the VX5HD is enroute.
One more rifle needs a load for the 3 day old mans doe rifle season. My National Ordnance 1903A3. I think I have a load pretty close.
I had tried it at 100 with decent results, Cranked the bullet drop compensator to 300 and hit a 10 inch gong at 300. Just need to fine tune that.
Anyone else prepping, camera scouting etc etc?
My buddies all prep. They fire 3 rounds a week before the season and are good to go.Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

I*ve started inspecting old stands and got to get my hind quarters in gear and start posting the property. 350 acres is a lot to post. Been thinning out the woodchucks for the farmer, they*ve been his garden. I*ll be out in Lewistown on the 24th, 25th with some buddies and will make sure all my hunting rifles are dialed in. Seen one outstanding buck already while checking my stands.
I*m not going anywhere special this year but I do have a bull elk hunt planned for next year. COVID19 hasn*t helped outfitters out west.
Everyone have a safe hunting season and kill sumptin.

That is a solid buck. I love my Bushnell cams by the way. Haven't you heard? You can't get a pump gun to shoot accurately. You must be using a bolt gun. LOL Good luck on the elk hunt! I have my PA stands ready, guns have been shot all summer. I will check the inline closer to October. I still have stands to check in NY. No cameras out yet. Hopefully get two or three out in NY next weekend.

Today was the last day of our 3 day "Old Man's and young kids rifle doe season".
Rain last night. Woke up at 5, saw rain and crawled back into bed.
At 8, it seemed to be letting up so drove the half hour to Avella and got into the woods.
I only went in a little less than 1/2 mile to a new spot. The last 2 days, I only kicked up 2 doe as I was leaving at noon due to high temps.
Today, I posted about 9AM and at 10, a single small doe came out of the thick shit I decided to sit next to.
I thought about passing because this one was small but hadn't seen anything else so decided to take it.
She saw me before I saw her and was bobbing her head while I was slowly bringing the rifle up to scope her.
I used the old National Ordnance parts gun and it did its job at about 40 to 50 yards.
She ran about 25 yards and dropped. Cool beans, chops, and Jerky chunks on the way.Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

That buck is the first decent sized one to come around.
That pumpgun did surprise me. I had only loaded 3 rounds of each bullet and this was the last of the 4 I tried.

For the 30-30, the 170 gr Speer Deep curls group well with my non conforming load. (thanks Quarterbore)
Speer told me to stick to the ones listed and IMR4350 is too slow for that bullet construction.
Although water and not gel, they expanded to just over twice the bullet diameter.

I got a Glock 20 and told my wife it would be a marginal but possibly effective bear gun ( hows that for reasoning ?)
The 200 grain hardcast barely flattened also being shot into water jugs.

The last thing I did so far to get ready for deer camp was to practice making an apple pie.
I did good and the boys each asked for one to sample saying they had to approve of the taste first.
