    Thanks QB.

We saw over 200 elk. 20 or 30 bulls.

You were right about huffing and puffing.
    I'm beat but happy.
    180 yards. .300 winmag
    Guide estimated about 450.

    Thanks QB.
    I'll do this again. Ha.
H's Custom Cuts is a few minutes out of town .
I'm having them do it here.

The Guide was a young guy Tony who really knew this ranch.
17000 acres and we drove a lot of it.

His eye for game was super.
We saw a herd, drove a couple miles around them, climbed a few hundred yards up a rock outcrop to position me only to find they moved off.
Back down, looped around again or walked the other side of the ridge until we finally got me into the 180 yard range.
I used my Savage .300 Win Mag with a full load of IMR4350 under 180 grain accubonds.

I shot,we both heard the hit but she didn't go down.
As the herd moved off, I was hoping to see her drop and had that sick feeling we would be tracking her.

The herd went over a ridge. One was lagging.
My guide said he'd run the half mile and for me to get there when I could.
As I crested that ridge, the herd was looking back ( almost all.of them / weird).
He had us loop around another hilly spur and there she was, down but not done.
I put another round through her to finish.
I have to believe I didn't slow down enough to make a good first hit.
Wind was 30 plus, adrenalin was up there, huffing and puffing I was, and I shot too soon.
180 should have been a relatively easy shot and thankfully. The guide knew where and how to find her.

Over all, a great day. Although I'm sure it was just my shooting, I can't wait to get the rifle back to he range and verify zero.

3 base layers, a polypropylene shirt and heavy jacket were just right given the constant wind.
    Temp was probly low 40s.
Gun was in its factory foam fill plastic case but 1800 miles.
I should have shot the rifle here first.

    2 things equipment related.
    I need a good quality 10 X 50 binoc and a better rangefinder.

My guide said they are a little pricey but he only takes them to this butcher.

I borrowed 2 100 qt coolers from my local deer processor and the Safeway in Wheatland sells dry ice.
This might end up being a double post

I love when a plan comes together. Are you addicted to western hunting yet?

    It really didn't take much.
    Yes. It is really cool.
    I'm thinking mule deer.
Maybe I'll buy a new rifle.

My wife said to spend my retirement money and go.

An.only slightly veiled desire for me to be gone for another week.

    I'd still marry her again.

Buy your bonus points. I have 4 for elk which will get me into the zone around Wheatland. If you go back out for muledeer put in for pronghorn also, some of the best meat I ever ate. Plenty of grass for them to feed on around where you were. Glad you had a great hunt!!!!!!

Good luck to anyone still heading out either tomorrow or any of the extended seasons.
My freezer is full and I mean to the top. about 10 pounds didn't fit so its in the upright.

i got back today after about 27 hours on the road including a catnap in Indiana for about 3 hours.

    The country is just beautiful.

I'm a happy old man. Can't wait to try again next year if the body holds up.

Congrats on the kick ass season. I’m going out tomorrow at 5:00 am. I don’t have high expectations but a deer would be nice. If not then I may add the muzzleloader stamp to my license and take a crack at that.

I missed a doe tonight at about 50 yrds with my Super Redhawk .44 mag. It didn't even run. Just walked off and milled around eating. I'm still waiting for the rail mount for my red dot. It's lost in Philly at the post office apparently.
