Phonebooks for a 9?

As a curiosity, how many inches of phone book would be needed to hold a 9mm at 7 yards?

Good point , ShakeyD. Type of ammo will affect the penetration here.

Depends on what size batteries it uses.

It depends on alot of factors. Easiest thing would be to take some books to the range and find out.

Funny thing is I tried something very similar to this a couple weeks ago.

I wanted to know how many 2x4's my 40 cal would penetrate.

i stacked 8- 2x4's with the 4" side facing me.

Stood at about 7ft and fire 1 Federal Hydroshock
It penetrated 4 2x4's then exited the side of the 5th and stopped into another
2x4 sitting next to my stack of 8.
Here's the kicker.. The round did not expand because the cavity on the tip of the bullet got packed with wood.

Hydrashocks are not dependable expanders

go with Ferderal HST, Corbon DPX, or Speer gold dot

I shot a 40sw Hydra into gel coverered in denim and it didnt expand AT ALL out of a 4 inch barrel
Spear GD short barrel +p 9mm out of a 3inch both expanded to ~.47 and out penetrated that 40 going 16 inches
Caliber arguments dont hold much weight in the light of proper bullet choice.

We had a guy from corbon out at a shoot and he let us shoot pretty much whatever into the gel.
The hydashock was a big loser all day, in ever calliber and every gun, failing regualarly to perform.
The HST and DPX performed constantly in all callibers and all barrel lengths.

Just after seeing that first hand every time I hear or see of someone shooting hyrashocks I gotta say something.

Thanks for the info! I'll be shooting some fmj ball and hydrashocks. I'll be curious to see how they shoot. That's what I've carried lately, but I'll have to see once I do the phonebook shoot.

Hmmm... That is a kicker then. The post in the center of the Hydra-Shok's hollow point is intended to prevent that phenomenon, "plugging", by directing hydrostatic force outward in a more uniform field.

I guess even the best designed intentions can fail. The most important part of the game is hitting your target.
