Default Who here has personally had a MIM part fail?

Might be interesting to learn how bad MIM manufactured parts are, or if they really are.

If by "fail", you include MIM parts that suck, then yes.

2 instances that I've had problems with:

    - MIM 870 extractors that wouldn't hold onto a shell rim
    - MIM 1911 slide stops that peened badly and wouldn't engage the follower

I don't know if the parts being MIM was really the underlying cause since neither fractured or disintegrated the way I might expect a MIM part to fail, but these were particularly annoying failures.

What is MIM to those of us that aren't in the know?

Metal injection molding ( MIM) is a metalworking process in which finely-powdered metal is mixed with binder material to create a "feedstock" that is then shaped and solidified using injection molding. The molding process allows high volume, complex parts to be shaped in a single step. After molding, the part undergoes conditioning operations to remove the binder (debinding) and densify the powders.

Are you 100% sure they were MIM?

I've had investment cast , forged , as well as machined from solid parts fail due to improper heat treatment.

I had a extractor in a recently-made Colt 1911 fail; the extractor claw broke off. The part was definitely MIM because the mold parting lines were prominent.

IMO, that one part does not condemn all MIM. I have several outer guns and multiple power tools with MIM parts that haven't failed. Poor process control can and does affect all manufacturing processes.

I've had two, Sig P220 takedown levers break that were MIM. I own two of the handguns, a blued and a two-tone. The ones that broke were the silver finished ones for the two-tone. After the second broke, I bought a blued steel one for the two-tone. Been shooting it for several years now.

MIM parts often have an approximately 1/8" circle somewhere on the part, left by the injection process. I say usually because I am guessing in some cases the circle may be removed in a final stage of manufacture, such as finish.
