Re: Running an AR15 with no buffer retaining pin?
Somebody also makes a shim for the back of the bolt carrier. Basically the relationship between bolt carrier at full lock up to the buffer and the retainer pin should not allow impact of the pin by the buffer.
I think lapping the shoulder on the upper to square up contact of the barrel extension should bring the carrier back a little and could help in this regard and possibly a different carrier could be slightly longer. The Gun is the Badge of a Free Man

Re: Running an AR15 with no buffer retaining pin?
It's a shearing scenario. The $18 sounds high, but if it shears during a SHTF and gets into the FCG (which it is known to do), the $18 gains a better perspective.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Re: Running an AR15 with no buffer retaining pin?
I run all of my ARs without the buffer retainer assembly. On most of my ARs I use the ArmaSpec silent recoil spring which is a self contained buffer and spring assembly that looks like a big glock recoil spring and sits in the receiver extension. The retainer is not required and it is a failure point. Choose your path...

Re: Running an AR15 with no buffer retaining pin?
It's not necessary. In fact, I've seen guns lock up if they sheer off. I run my PCC without one because I like pressure on the carrier all the time on a blowback gun...I also run a a rifle AR10 spring on it.
