A Stroudsburg man who shot himself in the foot while hunting in upstate New York on Wednesday paddled across a lake in his canoe for two hours to get help, officials said.

Julio C. Blanco, 65, shot himself near a campsite about 10:30 a.m. on Thirteenth Lake in Johnsburg, the Warren County Sheriff's Office said.

Blanco was hunting deer and was walking through a wooded area when his rile accidentally discharged, the sheriff's office said.

The bullet struck his left foot near his big toe, the sheriff's office said.

Blanco was not aware the safety had disengaged while he was carrying the rifle, the sheriff's office said.

Blanco then walked to Thirteenth Lake and paddled across the lake in his canoe to get help. It took Blanco approximately two hours from the time of the accident until he was able to find assistance.

Blanco was transported by North Warren EMS to the Glens Falls Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Warren County is a tourist area in the Lake George region.
