Homemade gel blocks
We made a homemade gel block from knox gelatin and water. (10% mix)
When my kid sends me the pics I will update post.
We shot some 9mm HST's and got very nice expansion. No suprise.
Something I found interesting is the AK went straight through but the 62 grain 5.56 stopped in the gel. The bullet flattened and tumbled but stopped about 16" into the block.
I thought for sure that little fast bullet would blow right through.
A subsonic 220 grain cast lead 300 bo bullet broke in half and penetrated further tgan the 5.56. Alloy is probably too hard.
Has anyone else tried this ?

Re: Homemade gel blocks
Actually Cinnamon.
It is recomended to add 10 drops of cinnamon oil to make the gel clearer.

Re: Homemade gel blocks
A group of us did this where I work, few years back. We used Tea Tree Oil as the anti-mold agent. We used 12 oz of Knox unflavored gelatin with 12 lbs of water. It was somewhat softer than ballistics gel, but a good first run. I seem to have lost the youtube video of the results. It held up to all handgun rounds, but completely disintegrated against a 7.62x54R.

Re: Homemade gel blocks
When Stoner was asked about the use of a .22 caliber bullet for his new battle rifle design, he said that caliber & weight was specifically chosen because where the .308 went straight through and the 7.62x39 could destabilize after several inches, the 55gr .22 would immediately destabilize and tumble upon impact, creating more damage.

Re: Homemade gel blocks
There are a bunch of recipes on the web. I can't remember which one I used. I went for a 10% mix.
And that 5.56 did indeed tumble
