While it has been discussed at length how to inspect reloaded cartridges and the many methods available, one of the easiest methods to start with is the power of personal observation in searching for the answer to the question "Will this cartridge fit safely in my firearm?"

Especially if it was given to you by Uncle Fred during the Covid quarrantine lockdown - who was cleaning out his basement and decided you should be gifted with every oddball cartridge he just couldn't bear to disassemble and throw away...

For example, if what you're used to shooting more closesly resembles the bottom cartridge (in this instance, a .557/.45 Martini Henry), the mashed cartridge on top without a shoulder (although apparently seated to the correct OAL) may not be safe in any rifle of that caliber.

Not a total loss - I'd pull the bullet which looks fantastic, soak the cartridge (sans bullet) in a container of oil or water for a couple of days, clean out the clumps of black powder, deprime this mess, and toss the brass in the "Somebody may want to make earrings some day" box...

Be sure to share your experience on other cartridges (and photos) confirming your powers of observation...
