    No problem! This is one of those super valuable oldschool tricks that being lost to time. Works on all steels as far as i know.

    This is also how traditional firearm blueing is done. Rust, boil, card(buff), repeat as desired. Finish with linseed oil or something similar.

    does the end of your buffer tube look like this with a notch:


    or this with just the 'lip' or shoulder on the tube:


    If it's the notch and your tube is twisted one direction or another, it will put force on the retainer pin from either side which won't allow it to move up and down. Before and after you tighten your castle nut, make sure the buffer retainer pin moves up and down freely.
