Default New to PA and looking for a hunt club

    Hi all,

Recently moved to Montgomery county from southern VA. Still trying to get my bearings with the northern hunting culture. We’re trying to avoid the pressure of local WMAs and hunting private land seems to be more of an individual endeavor vs the club affiliation that I’m used to. Anyone aware of a hunt club looking for responsible members? Retired vet. Fed employee. Got a 10 year old son and we hunt deer, turkey and waterfowl.

    Any info would be appreciated.

don't be afraid of public land. There is a lot of it and Most of it isn't hunted as hard as you may think.

Gotcha. I’m just spoiled with club life. I’ll check them out.

Lots of large state Forests in PA. good hunting. In some places deer die of old age if you can believe it. Most hunters don't go more than a 100 - 200 yards from the road or truck

I got it. Like I said, just a little culture change. Its hard to replace 250 private acres restricted to a dozen hunters with public lands on the eastern side of PA.

Not afraid to walk, although ATVs are more fun!

    ^THIS

If you are willing to spend some time hiking in and going places that are somewhat difficult or inconvenient to get into or out of you can find yourself decent hunting areas. ATVs are probably going to be out. While there are some areas of the state forests that have roads, typically the access gates get shut and locked at the beginning of the season.

If you are a little short on time for scouting, or even if you aren't but want to make the most of what time you are spending, give a look at the LIDAR Hillshade projections. They show much more contour than a typical topo map.

Overlay them with the SGL maps and you can find some awesome little out of the way draws or valleys.

If you are interested, I could tie a deer to a fence post, and you could shoot it out the window of your Rolls Royce.

I’m not short on time in the manner of free days, but I don’t have a lot of days tied together. Scouting is my primary concern and as everyone knows, you gotta put in the off-season walks to find those honey pots.

I don’t know how many of y’all are in south easter PA, but so far, none of the 3 local hunters that I’ve randomly bumped into hunt anywhere around here. The all go 3-6 hours away. One actually said the closest low pressure spots are in NJ. LOL.

Anyway, I appreciate the input. The search continues.

I don’t know if I’m ready for that hardcore Pittsburgh hunting style.
