Refinishing a Mosin M44
I fully understand that refinishing older guns generally devalues them. That said, refinishing and already refinished older gun shouldn’t raise too many eyebrows.
When I bought this M44 the original reddish hue was already replaced with a walnut looking stain job. It looked good and was done decently enough but I decided to redo it more for a project than anything else.
It was just a matter of removing the old finish, applying a few coats of Minwax number 225, red mahogany, and then topping it off with a few coats of tru oil. Patience is always key making sure everything is fully dry before taking the next step. I know it may appear too glossy for some but it is to my liking and if I change my mind some triple zero steel wool is already on hand.
Thanks for looking and as always, all comments good or bad are always appreciated, Brian

Wow, looks excellent! I'd keep the shine personally - I like it.

Looks good.
The Russians used Amber shellac in order to get that reddish look.Join the GOA & save $5.00. https://www.gunowners.org/mac-subs-join-goa.htm

Nice job, nothing wrong with that change, it looks better with the more reddish color you used in my opinion.

Looks great. Nice job. I redid the furniture on my 91/30. Before and after in the pics.

I like it a lot. Similar to what I did to my yugo Mauser 20 years ago.

Gel paint stripper and a plastic scrapper is the best way, then some very light sanding after the stripper in the high spots.
I’ve done over a half dozen of these rifles over the years and that’s the easiest method and won’t ruin what’s beneath the layers of Russian crap or screw with the integrity of the wood.
If you want a cleaner original Russian Amber Shellac look then do a light buff with 00 steel wool and then reapply a new coat of amber shellac.Last edited by Hodgie; May 3rd, 2020 at 08:36 PM.

I'm curious Bripro - how much would you charge for a refinish job?
Or would the time it takes price out any possibility of doing it for someone else?
