Default Saving for a 22 rifle for target competition

I have never shot in competition before. I normally shot in the military, and for fun on the range. But I really enjoy shooting targets and interested in doing competitions.

What is out there for pistol and rifle? Also, what rifles would you recommend and why?

I am only choosing 22LR because the ammo is cheap and I have seen a few videos. I can't find any videos that talk about rifle choice and set up, only the competitions.

These used to be the standard. I've been out of anything related to competition for many years, so don't know what is currently popular.

A former boss used to shoot 22lr matches with a Winchester model 52, out towards Lock Haven. That was about 5 years ago, but I know he used to swear by it. Think it was standing up, indoors, no scope if I recall correctly (I dont keep up with the exact terms, but whatever type of competition that is). For pistol, tough to beat the Ruger Mk 1/2/3/4 series without dropping major cash (and most of the Ruger Mk line are also highly customizable with Volquartsen parts)

There used to be 2 older guys came in the bar that shot 22's at 25'. They were shooting a .25" dot, trying to put a .22 dead center. When they did it left a little red ring around the bullet hole. They did it often. Anschutz was there gun of choice IIRC. Good ammo can get pricey for 22's
You can start cheap. A Ruger pistol and a Savage rifle. Both shoot pretty accurate. From then the sky's the limit on $$$.
Personally I have a S&W M41 that is more accurate than I am.

CZ makes a pretty good .22 rifle also - bears looking into and won't break the back.

CZ rifles are not just good shooters, usually they are good lookers too. I don't know where they get their wood, but most of it is really nice!

Just a thought, but if you shot in the military I'm surprised you're not looking into NRA high power rifle, which is basically the USMC KD course in a civilian format. AR rifles in 5.56 and once you start talking about the super high tech competition rim fire ammo....the ammo is no more expensive. Especially if you reload. Honestly the rifles are no more expensive either. New Holland Rifle and Pistol Club which is not too far from me hosts matches and they have a range out to 600 yds.

On the other hand, the rimfire stuff is quite often indoors and year round. And there are probably many more ranges available to compete.
