Default AR lower caliber stamp question

I have two AR lowers one stamped 5.56 and one stamped multi.. My question is, if I am using the one stamped 5.56 with a non 5.56 upper, am I breaking any kind of law? I know it sounds silly but.... hey you never know. Yes, I already know I can just use the one stamped multi and avoid any possibility if there is but I'd still like to know.

I'll concur with General Geoff. I'm not aware of any violation, but I'd want some sort of documentation if I were going to do it. Just in case, you know?

    NO,

It's just that the Manufacturer had to put a Caliber or designation there when they were made.

It could say : Caliber- .399 Bananas and you could would be fine using any caliber upper on it.

UNLESS you were to Fuse the upper/lower together making it permanent in a different caliber than listed THEN you'd have to have the Permanent caliber engraved on it.

    No.
You are not breaking any laws by putting a different caliber upper on your lower.
However the only law breaking, would be putting a barrel length shorter then 16" on it, without the lower being registered as an
    SBR (short barreled rifle).

Other than that, you could put any caliber upper on your existing lower without breaking any laws, from a .22lr to a .50 Beowulf.

    Isn't that fun...

I find I really like shooting the .399 Bannanas round. The BC of that round is just... well... Bannanas!

    I crack myself up.

When we had our run in the local PD tried to say ANY modification of the weapon at all was illegal. (Since I was using a .22 conversion kit in an AR) This was after they retracted the "semi-auto" rifles were illegal line they fed me originally. One officer went on to say he was an FFL, and tell me he wanted to make an adjustment to some pistols magazine well so he could use a drum from a similar pistol and he couldn't because it was illegal.

He went extremely far out of his way to tell me everything on earth was illegal... telling me that he studies case law concerning firearms... none of it was true.

Just be warned their are "those" types out there. And they could be "serving and protecting" somewhere near you...
