Re: Favorite Barrel Length for "Non-Essential" AR
I prefer 16" with a linear comp because I'm pretty sensitive to blast. Not recoil, just blast. I considered a pistol build until I came to that realization.

Re: Favorite Barrel Length for "Non-Essential" AR
I already have the 16" which is obviously essential but my favorite is 20" because of its accuracy at longer ranges. I had an A2 Colt HBar that had the 1:7 twist 20" barrel that was a tack driver with the 62gr NATO SS109 and Federal 69gr BTHP but the 55 gr anything was as accurate as throwing rocks at the target at 200 yards. 1:9 twist is the prefered twist rate for me now. I was looking at a Colt AR15 A4 full size before all this virus BS started but I may go with the Windham because they seem to be an on the ball company.

My 4" 22lr AR with a can is my absolute favorite by far. Cheap to shoot and quiet as all hell.

Re: Favorite Barrel Length for "Non-Essential" AR
Not sure how "non-essential" factors in. They're all essential to me. : )
I have little AR experience, having hugged my M1A for so many years, but I admit its nice to carry the AR, even if my finger hates the mag release. My M&P Sport does everything I need it to do at half the weight. I saw the post recently about the barrel length issue with both 55gr and 62gr. Seems 16" is the optimal length for across the board, velocity, accuracy and portabilty. Now, falling into a pistol category is another contingency. All things equal, it would seem 14" would cover that base, as well. Not up to speed on the details of that, other than concealability being an issue if that's desired.

I realize the way I framed it was a bit whacky... but what I didn't want dragged into the conversation was "I think XX is best for home defense", "I think XX is best for a patrol rifle".
I guess it should really be - what's your favorite spare rifle barrel length, hand-off to a buddy barrel length, spare parts rifle barrel length, etc.
