Sorry to jump in..... But I know my School District has requested it in Dauphin County. Easy way to generate more Tax money.

They (Assessment office) are checking for improvements made on the home and property. Additions, room conversions, pools, Gazebos, larger blacktop driveway, outbuildings, etc.

For example - You convert the "SPACE" above the garage to a bedroom.

They already have sq footage, they have no idea of rooms. Soon outfit by the name of Tyler Technologies is doing the data collection for the county.

Here's a hypothetical for you. Let's say you buy a row home in a large city for what seems to be a good price. You get it fixed up and now it's tax assessment time. They assess your row home at a significant value over what you paid. Now your taxes for that row home increase for the new value. Of course, it's assessed higher because of the current housing market is inflated.

Now, imagine when the housing market collapses like it has several times in the past. You're still stuck paying those taxes on that home that with the high assessment, while it's value has been lost. You can't get it reassessed until the next time the county does that, which is around 5 year isn't it?

Can't sell it because the taxes are out of alignment with the value.

What is inside of your home is none of their business.
