Re: Choosing the correct shotgun ammunition.
Have you patterned that buckshot at defensive ranges? I found that it opened up very wide at short ranges out of my 500. I ended up going with Hornady Critical Defense buckshot after patterning that round. I am obviously in the camp of tighter pattern is better.

Re: Choosing the correct shotgun ammunition.
It would take a heck of a lot of slugs to wear out a full choke. Years ago I cut apart a Remington and Winchester slug. Both mic'ed way under the choke diameter. The object of the hollow base slug is for the back edge to expand and seal on the tube.

Keep firing a gun the way you choose no need to listen to anyone else. Ever seen a bulged barrel? Probably not or you wouldn't be telling us about your in depth observation.
I repeat, don't fire a rifled slug through a full choke especially in older fixed choke shotguns.Corruption is the default behavior of government officials. JPC
