Default Re: PA Counties locked down

I just wrote to the three Bucks County Commissioners. Two responded. I'll post their responses here.

Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia, LCSW, Chair (In case you don't know, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker. I know quite a few of them and they tend to always color inside the lines.) Anyway, here is her response:

"Thank you for reaching out to me. I have been a commissioner for 12 years and have never ever received so many emails. Typically, I get 2-3 on an issue…this issue has gotten me into the hundreds.

I am going to be honest and tell you I just can’t keep up with them and do my job…a large part of which is working to get us re-opened. I also have NO staff…Commissioners have one assistant, each, but she cannot do my emails.

Hence, I am going to begin to send a pretty standard reply even though I promise I am READING each and every email…and they have all been unique.

Here are the points I want you to know:

    1. I believe Bucks County is unique in that we have mastered the art of social distancing and we are smart enough to know we have to use it throughout the yellow phase

    2. I believe, if we are allowed to move to yellow, our citizens and businesses will commit to very STRONG use of PPE and masks because they will want to stay OPEN and they will want everyone to stay healthy

    3. I know we are the only county doing contact tracing and we have been successful in quarantining people and have a 95% outreach and research rate. Hence, I believe we are ready to take on the probable slight increase, in cases, that occur when you go into the yellow phase.

    4. I am NOT going to order us into Yellow, is complete defiance of Governor Wolf because I do not want towns and boroughs to lose PEMA funding, I do not want business license and occupancy permits revoked, and I do not want insurance to refuse to reimburse because of incidents that occur by opening in defiance. I also do not have the power to do that; really!

    5. BUT I AM going to keep advocating and keep proving Bucks County is ready to be yellow, that our numbers prove it and that our businesses are able to follow CDC guidelines.

I know you might not agree with all of my points but I am with you. Give us a few days to get this going and PLEASE help us by keeping 6 feet apart and using face coverings as it WILL keep our numbers low and that is what we NEED!

    Diane

The other response is from the other Democrat, Robert Harvie. He was a high school social studies teacher for 26 years. (Strange coincidence that both Dems have careers in Social Work/Social Studies) Here is his response:

Thank you for reaching out in regards to the County response to COVID-19. The conversation the Commissioners had with Dr. Levine and the Governor's staff on Saturday focused on the data we have gathered here in Bucks over the past two months about the virus, how it spreads, and how it has impacted our County. We are doing a level of contact tracing that counties around us, including Philadelphia, are not doing. In fact, our level of contact tracing may be the most robust in the state. The data collection is important to our decision making process and that's what we were discussing over the weekend. I am confident that we are moving in a positive direction based on the data, but we aren't ready to move yet, and we made that clear in our discussions on Saturday. What we have asked for is a tentative date from the governor when, if things continue to move as they are, we may be able to move from red to yellow. We made a request, not a demand. And we disagree with the decisions of other counties to go to yellow on their own.

In the meantime, we are doing what we can to provide guidance to businesses to help them make the transition from red to yellow phase, whenever that occurs. On top of state and federal support, the County will be launching our own economic grant program to assist small business owners. Keep in mind that significant measures are still in place even in the yellow phase, and many businesses will still be closed. Masks, curbside pickup for food, plexiglass shields at the stores, social distancing and quarantining based on CDC and FDA guidelines, will be with us for a while.

While I was writing this, I heard from the last commissioner....the Republican. I had mentioned that as veteran who fought for this country, I am angry over hearing Wolfe call the state citizens cowards and deserters especially since Wolfe never served a day. Hence, Commissioner DiGirolamo's response. (He's a man of few words.) Here is his response:

Thank you for your service and the support. I will continue to do what I think is best for Bucks. – Gene

Bottom line - We will do what Wolfe says to do. We are neither stunning nor brave.

Personally, I'm tired of PPE, and social distancing since neither one, as they're implemented are going to do anything to stop this. How long do we need to continue to wear masks to leave our home? Until this disease is eradicated? Chances are that will never happen. What about the next disease? Will we have to take even more stringent measures?

Considering that most people aren't wearing anything that's remotely effective, and many of those that are wearing something aren't wearing it correctly, there's no point in even trying. Sure stores are wiping down belts and touch pads, but they're not wiping anything else down. What happens when someone picks up a can of beans with their disease ridden fingers and puts it back and 99yr old man behind them picks it up and puts in their cart? How did wearing PPE protect him? Even those wearing gloves aren't doing it right because they're touching things that may be infected, or they're rubbing their uncovered nose with their gloved hand.

It just isn't possible to maintain any kind of control over the long term. I just heard that one grocery store in Pottstown was closed for a week so they could do a "deep cleaning" because one employee was discovered to have had it. Chances are there were many other people that had the disease coming in the entire time, but they didn't do any cleaning until an employee had it. I'm not saying that stores should be cleaning constantly because that's impossible, I'm just saying that there is nothing really that can be done to stop the spread at this point. It's out there, it's going to continue to be out there whether we wear masks and gloves or not. We cannot continue to live our lives as though we're actually doing anything effective by wearing a mask.

It's a shame that our elected eunuchs cannot see for themselves that the response was mostly a political stunt, to exploit a "crisis" and gain more control. They need to stop kowtowing to the idea that any of this did anything to "flatten the curve", stop being politicians and actually be people. Get angry, speak their mind, I'd have more respect for them if they did.

all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.

    I hate this phrase
    "we are allowed to move"

Just like the pot heads in work, "pot should be legal" they look at me sideways when I say "NO, don't make it legal, take it off the freekin books" hence, don't tell me what I can do.. that's not how it works here....

    I agree ^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Panic Reactions have been Symbolism over Substance! It follows the idea that 'doing something' is better than 'doing nothing', as though you can only react in extremes.

No society can be sustained without turning activity into negotiable monetary value for goods and services. With no activity, there can be no economy nor can there be money for governmental services. Eventually, beyond the illusion, both will fail.

Maybe more importantly, this country was founded on individualism not socialism - individual freedom, individual evaluation and choice, individual self-protection and individual risk taking. Government was designed to operate with 'the consent of the governed.' We were not founded on Governmental Edict - That is what we declared FREEDOM from! The current governmental approach, of mandates and threats, seriously violates the very foundational principles of America. Every government employee who uses this approach or supports that idea should be put out of office, post-haste!

When all is said and done, the world will need to move on with life despite the virus still being very present and the effects still taking a toll. To survive as a functioning society, we will need to move forward, away from the fear-mongering, with reasonable precautions, and live with the results.

This should have been the response at the beginning!

Bucks County is on fire. A FB group opened today and I've lost track of the numbers who joined. Also, a protest materialized for tomorrow morning in Doylestown.
