I suppose it's time for me to answer the question. My closest guns are down the hall two rooms over and in a safe. I still can't bring myself to put guns in a nightstand even though we have no kids. Something is bound to happen. The 1911 feels the best in hand although it is probably a bit of overkill. I could back it up with an Italian 32. Easy to shoot.

    Are you a democrat?

"Something is bound to happen". Seriously? Like what?

"The 1911 feels the best in hand although it is probably a bit of overkill". HUH??? "Overkill"???
You mean because even if you just graze a bad guy, it will blow his arm clean off??? What the heck does this MEAN? "overkill"?
Are we only supposed to use equal or lesser force against someone intent on doing us harm? What the WHAT???

I read the post multiple times, and I can't make any sense of it.
The only thing that makes sense is "Democrat". Ha.

So how many of you have actually practiced your draw stroke? How many seconds does it take, and how many movements, until you've got a gun and a light aimed in at someone at the foot of your bed or at the bedroom door? Can you do it in the dark, under pressure, when groggy and disoriented? (No offence ForeverPA, but you're toast.)

That's the great thing about the bedside holster. One second to sit up. One second to swing my feet over and onto the floor, with hands on the edge of the bed, and then drop my right hand down 6" onto the gun. One second to stand up, marry my hands together and punch the gun out as I turn around. The beauty is that an intruder doesn't know I've reached for a gun until he's staring down the muzzle. And the fact that I've been practicing 80% of that draw stroke every day of my entire life.

The key to having a bedside weapon is having to time to get it in your hands. That means some sort of alert or warning that you will need to hear to let you know. If you wake up with a guy standing over you well it's too late unless you have a gun under your pillow and are gripping it as you wake up. Yeah, real safe there. Your house has to be hardened to make a silent entry impossible. Dogs are great for this and windows or doors that cannot be opened when locked without making lots of noise imperative.

Sig P239 in .40S&W in the nightstand. PS90 with two coupled 50 round mags sit next to the nightstand. Thinking about switching the P239 out with my SP2022. Want to make sure it can cycle Underwood Xtreme Defender before I make the change.

This reminds me of people who swear the gun was unloaded. A loaded gun sliding around in a nightstand is a bad idea. You do what you want.

I keep my pistol in the safe and take it out before bed when I put my carry gun away. It’s in a ALS holster. When I get up it goes back in the safe before I go take a morning leak.

Everyone has to do what they feel is right.

Right. People who wouldn't dream of carrying a gun without a holster will toss a gun willy-nilly into a nightstand. That's why the answer is to use a bedside holster, not to go unarmed.
