Get back home bag
Anyone still physically commuting?
So who has a GBHB?
I drive 17 miles one way to work, its pretty rural so if the truck becomes unavailable, disabled or someone decides to take it while I was at work, I guess I would have no choice but to hike home, if SHTF the situation might become less friendly to free movement
90% of my GBH hike will take a few hours at best,on a good day. But what if you have to keep off the roads? or I am further out than work? or its at night?
I have a maxpedition jumbo sling bag with a Harbor freight padded black nylon waist belt sewn in loops to help distribute the load to my hips and legs and off my shoulder
Stuff I have in it:
Compass,
Individual first aid kit
KaBar small 6" tanto on the shoulder pad
fire stick + small bic
millsurp OD poncho
cammo polar fleece blanket or camo pullover
1.5l metal water bottle with 9' of duct tape and electrical tape wrapped to the outside
Beretta 92 in an internal holster and 2 mags in mag holder on the outside
clip on sunglasses
bug spray
2 ziplock with trail mix (added in when things could get weird ( like now))
headlight
Gerber multi tool
paracord
Whats in your GBHB?

You need a water filter as there are a lot of water sources in PA. I own a Maxpedition Jumbo and will say I'd want more gear that what that bag is capable of carrying.
I'd also add a fire starter as it's going to take you longer than a day to hump it 17 miles. I'd also bring an extra pair of socks as well...I change out my items depending on season.
In Summer, water is more important to me compared to food. In Winter it's the opposite I'd rather carry more food as in the Winter there is typically snow that I can melt for water.

17 miles isn't to bad at all on foot assuming you are in decent shape. Can easily keep a 3 mile per hour pace without over doing it.
Add a pair of good boots to the trunk if you wear dress shoes to workHoplophobia is funny

I keep a cheap Baofeng radio in mine, programmed to the repeaters between home and work.

Re: Get back home bag
I live 1 mile from work I can walk home, my GHB is everything in my pockets and my water bottle. The wife works 6 miles from home and we have a route picked out with a meeting place at a friends house 1/2 way between home and her work.
We the people love our country so let the government fear us.

Can you fit a bike in your car? Or even a beater bike on an exterior rack with a cheap lock? Seems a lot easier than trying to hike all night.

I have a beater bike. I drive a pickup. Great Idea.
I never tried working a BaoFeng Ham, I'm kind of wary of them and it looks like a new hobby that takes time to learn how to use
Life straw, good idea

Re: Get back home bag
I love the bike idea!
Worst case I have 20-25 mile to get home. All I need is a gun or two, first aid, water, and a snack. My GHB has a lot more than that, but I can dump what I don't need, depending on the location and the season. Much better to have and not need.
