    Default Who do they "poll"?

This may be a question with an obvious answer, but I just can't quite grasp it. When you are watching the news, or on CNN.com, or basically anywhere where they say "In the most recent polls, Obama is up/down X%". Where do they get this information, and who do they poll for the figures? The reason I'm asking this is, according to those unofficial polls, Obama seems to be in the lead for Presidency, however in looking around my community/this forum/general public it seems that McCain supporters are "waiting in the wings". I know the figures are estimates, but how accurate are they really? Obama supporters seem to be very outspoken and loud about their views, but McCain supporters as a whole seem to take the stance of "when the time comes I know what I'm doing, nothing more to see here". In the end, is there a chance for McCain to win by a landslide, merely because his supporters aren't as outspoken, thusly skewing current results?

I hope this makes sense, if not feel free to tell me I'm retarded.

They poll who ever's at home during the day, while Republicans are at work.

Yes, and if the Polls said McCain was ahead, you'd be hearing things very differently here..

Polls are good if they show your guy ahead
Polls are bad if they show your guy behind..

It's the same way every election no matter whos running.. lol

Generally, they make outbound phone calls to "random" people not on the do not call list. These calls usually happen during regular business hours. As was said before, most people are at work during these times. Those home are either, Stay at home parents, unemployed, or on welfare. The downside to these polls is that there are so many people that can't think for themselves so they hear one candidate is the popular choice and that is who they vote for.

I have said it many times before, there should be a "political intelligence" test before anyone is allowed to vote, too many folks vote without having the slightest inkling of where a candidate stands on any issues. There is a test before one gets a drivers license, there are tests before one is admitted to college. There is background checks for our 2nd Amendment right to purchase a gun, but any idiot can vote. Sad, really, when you think about it.

I saw on NBC they showed a poll with Obama up by double digits, didn't mention it was way outside what the other polls were reading. The ticker at the bottom had another poll(one of the well recognized ones), which wasn't mentioned, showed Obama up by only 2%. They want everyone to think this is already over.

I've had a few calls during the day the past month from someone introducing themselves as a polling service and asking if I have ten minutes or so to answer a few questions. I don't know if they were political since I hang up on 100% of any of those type of calls. I shouldn't even get them since I've been on the no-call list ever since it's beginning.
