I want to sell a rifle to someone on the other side of the state. can I ship it myself if I ship it to his dealer?

Rifles can be shipped UPS ground and you also can ship long guns via USPS. For UPS, you must go to a UPS customer center though, a UPS store will not ship firearms. You'll have to do a price comparison to see what is the cheapest method. And for what it's worth, you can ship a long gun directly to another PA resident.

UPS (and FedEx) tariff basically requires an FFL on at least one end of the shipment.

UPS accepts packages containing firearms (as defined by Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code) for transportation only (a) between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code), and government agencies and (b) where not otherwise prohibited by federal, state or local law (i) from an individual to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector; and (ii) from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to an individual.

YEP, What he said ^^^^ Easier to just pack it up and mail it to the buyer. Perfectly legal to do so (as long as you don't think the buyer might be prohibited).

If you have access to tennis balls I would recommend you cut a hole in one tennis ball and slide it over the end of the barrel. I also use painters tape over the ball and barrel to keep it in place. I do this to protect the end of the barrel and to stop it from punching a hole in the bubble wrap and box.

I have seen that happen and so have a few of my FFL friends. The box arrives with the barrel sticking out and usually damaged. I also use tennis balls when shipping out knives and swords.

    Just My $0.02.
