Gang Refuses to Bow to New Zealand’s Gun Reforms: 'We Can't Guarantee Our Own Safety'
By Brendan Cole On 4/1/19 at 6:03 AM EDT
The New Zealand government has warned those who do not give up their military-style semi-automatic (MSSA) guns by September face five years in jail. The news comes as one notorious gang says it will refuse to hand its weapons in.

On Tuesday, the country’s parliament will hear the first reading of new legislation designed to clamp down on MSSA weapons, as it seeks to expedite changes in the law following the Christchurch mosque attacks.

The bill will outlaw MSSA guns and assault rifles, although there will be exemptions for guns that are often used by farmers for pest control.

New Zealand biker gangs mosques Christchurch Members of different biker gangs perform the haka as a tribute to victims in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 20, five days after the twin mosque shootings. The Mongrel Mob gang said it would not give up weapons set to be banned in the wake of the attack. ANTHONY WALLACE/AFP/Getty Images The Mongrel Mob gang, which is one of New Zealand’s most notorious, won favorable headlines when it said it would protect mosques after the attacks and pledged solidarity with the country's Muslim community.

But Sonny Fatu, who heads the gang's Waikato branch based in North Island, said members who had illegal guns should be trusted to not harm members of the public.

"Will gangs get rid of their weapons? No. Because of who we are, we can't guarantee our own safety," he told Stuff.

"It's not in our culture to inflict harm on innocent people like what happened in Christchurch," Fatu said.

"The attacks between our organizations are gang-on-gang, they do not involve the non-gang members.

“Although there may be peripheral damage and violence that occasionally spills out into the public eye, it is absolutely and without intention for any harm to be caused to non-gang members," he said.

However, Police Minister Stuart Nash said there would be no exceptions to the new legislation and that there would be five years jail for those caught with them.

He also defended the speed of the legislation, which could take effect as early as April 12, less than four weeks after the terror attack that left 50 people dead.

"My advice to the gangs is: 'Hand your weapons back,'" he said, according to the New Zealand Herald.

"Everyone I have spoken to, be they hunters, farmers et cetera, have said you do not need MSSAs or an assault weapon to go hunting or do farm business. These are guns designed to kill people.

"We don't think we're moving fast in this at all."

There will be an amnesty until the end of September, where people with guns or gun parts that will be illegal can surrender them to police. There will also be a buy-back scheme for the forbidden weapons, which could cost the government over $200 million.

Gun City, which sold weapons to the man accused of the killings, has started behind a petition calling on parliament for a longer public consultation process

The Fudds over there sound like the Fudds over here. " Derrr…You do need no semi auto to do farm work and hunt. "
As soon as someone uses a different type of gun... It will be "I don't think you need a gun to do farm work or hunt, there are bows and arrows that work just as good for that.
Until someone gets killed with an arrow....

I wonder what would happen if the Maori gangs would say, any arrest of a Maori gang for not giving up their gun, will result in a dead politician. (HAKA!!!!)

Black Power has some leadership of European descent.

NZ has around 70 patched gangs. Mongrel Mob and Black Power are some of the more powerful ones.

No they are not giving up their guns and basically they told the cops to get stuffed.

That will flip the politicians out as they have no means to protect themselves and even the Prime Minister gets sparse police protection.
