    Default Olympic Arms K16?

This gun looks like a good bet for a first, casual target shooting AR-15. What do you guys think?

The internet tends to bash Oly, but their barrels are some of the best.

Don't take any info from people who have never had one.

I have one. Stake the gas key and go shooting.

I also have an Oly, an older Plinker model. I had gotten it because I lived in the PRNJ at the time, and it was NJ legal.
I have never had a problem with it, with the exception of one aftermarket 5rd plastic mag that, once inserted, would not come out of the gun. I had to destroy the mag to remove it. Since moving to Pa, every AR mag I have inserts and removes from the Oly just fine, so I am going with the line that the mag was the POS, not the Oly.

According to that picture you will have to buy some means of aiming your gun. I don't see any sights on that rifle. Just rails for mounting a scope or detachable sights.

Or for a couple hundred more you can buy a smith & wesson who has a pretty good reputation.

    ETA:
I found another one I wanted to post for you.

G&R is commonly known for building expensive, high end AR's. We have decided to put together a budget line of AR's for the consumer that doesn't have deep pockets or someone that simply wants a "beater."

In order to try and keep the cost down, we left out the trigger and hammer. By doing this, the consumer avoids the 11% FET. So you will HAVE to add a trigger and hammer in order to make the gun run.

    SPECS:

Stag Arms 16" 1/9 Twist Barrel
    USGI A3 Upper (T-Marked)
    CMT Charging Handle
    BCM M4 handguards
    BCM M16 BCG
BCM 6 position, mil-spec collapsible stock kit
    Stag Arms Lower
    Stag Arms LPK

    PRICE: $659!!

Please contact us with any questions. sales@grtactical.com
Aside from having to istall a couple parts it looks like a pretty good deal..

I was planning on adding either a scope or a red dot. What type of rail is on there? Sorry I'm an AR noob. I don't know what I'm looking for as far as scope rings or anything.

I have this red dot laying around, would it mount directly to that rail?:

Sure, why not - seems like a good price if you like that style of AR.

Me, I got an Oly CAR-16 clone for a tad less than the K16 AR you are looking at from a dealer at a funshow. A complete AR with lifetime warranty, in a factory case with 1 30rd mag and sling - for less than I could have built one.

My AR has the A1 "Viet Nam" upper, but with forward assist, and I turned it into a "Hollywood fakey" XM177. I later discovered it came standard with a stainless barrel.

Don't buy into that Internet Oly-bashing BS. Anyone can pay too much for something.

If nothing else, read the 3rd page of this thread...

i have a plinker plus, works fine for me... im told i shouldnt shoot wolf or military surplus ammo, for what reason im not sure.... other then that its a good gun...

When i was interested in purchasing my first firearm i called my good friend who is an assultman in the marines... he told me to buy an M4 and nothing else.... so i went to a gun show and found an oly dealer and i liked the price on my plinker so i grabbed it.

Next weekend my buddy came home and taught me how to strip it before i ever even shot it... then we went and shot it and he said it was ALOT nicer then what they are issued in the military... so based on his expertise ill say they are nice guns, but i dont have any experiance with any other.
