    Default Bad news. Good news.

Well went to the range this morning to shoot my new M&P 40c 2.0 that I got for $299 from Sportsmans O.S. but wanted to warm up with my 9 first. Stepped up to the line and....click huh? Slapped the mag ....click! Dropped out the mag and chambered round of fmj and reloaded with some jhp and same shit....click. Checked the primer of the first round and damn. No dimple, scratch or any sign of contact. Oh well, got the 40 out and ran a hundred of mixed rounds through it no problem. Got home and looked at the 9 and pulled out the striker assy and the damn firing pin was gone. Snapped off somehow. Was there two weeks ago at my last range visit. Cleaned gun and did some dry fire since so how the hell did it break off?
Now the good news. Called S&W and got right through and told the guy my story and he asked if I wanted to send it in and I said I just wanted a new striker assy and he said they could send one right out to me. I asked how much and he said NO CHARGE. Wow! Now I got to thinking, is this common for M&P's. Maybe I should have asked for two. Anybody know if this is a common breakage?

Is this your carry piece? If so that's a bit unnerving. Sounds like you'll have it fixed up quick though.

It was my bedside gun. Light and laser but Shield and 40c are good to go.

Sounds like the firing pin could not stand up to dry fire. Could be a single unusual occurrence (defective firing pin) or it could be the design won't tolerate dry fire. Dry Fire "snap caps" are plentiful, for that reason. Over the years, some firing pins were noted for breaking, such as my Dad's 1950-ish Marlin 336SC (lever 30-30).

Does the owner's manual say anything about dry firing?

Just read the manual. No mention of dry fire.

Looked thru the 'net, doesn't seem to be a common problem in the newer models.

There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.
