Default Ruger 10/22 - Best choice?

I want to get a good quality, accurate .22 rifle for target shooting. I love blasting through a couple boxes of .22 ammo at the range, and I think the .22 is a great tool to get back to basics and work on the fundamentals of trigger control as well.

So, I want a .22 rifle, but I don't want to spend AR-15 type money on one. I've seen some .22 rifles for well over $1,000. Not for me!

I'd love to find a Ruger 10/22 with a thumbhole stock and stainless barrel. 10/22 owners, how is the trigger? Nice and crisp, or is an aftermarket trigger in order? How is the acccuracy from the gun out of the box?

I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 scope from the .270 I'm selling that I'll be installing on whatever .22 I end up buying, so I think that should be more than adequate.

    Thanks!
    Dave

The trigger does not suck out of the box. But it can easily be improved upon.

    Accuracy is also not bad.

The great thing with the 10/22 is all of the aftermarket stuff there is. And how easy it is to upgrade. You can get the stock 10/22 then add the thumb hole stock and more.

You can't go wrong with the 10/22. The best thing for what you want to do might be to find an older one in a pawn shop, a little beat up is okay, because you're going to ditch the stock and barrel anyway. Doing it that way will not only be cheaper, but you can build exactly what you want. You can find thumbhole stocks for the 10/22 all day long on ebay.

My 10/22 is from when I was a kid(I know, that was a long time ago), but it was accurate enough to drive nails with at 25 yards, with open sites. I used to take it with me (sling) on my honda 70, to shoot woodchucks on our farm, and it could kill them easily out to 100 yards away, again, with only open sites. They are still a bargain for how well they are made.

i got the one with fiber optic sights and wood stock for $200 at gander mtn., its a fun little gun but the trigger is crap even after a little smoothing. I usually just deal with the shittyness of 22 triggers, but if your picky about them you'll prob. be upgrading.

www.rimfirecentral.com The folks over there can help you spend as much or as little as you want on tricking out a 10/22.

I have one and thought the stock trigger was way too heavy. I spent a $30 on a VQ target hammer and it cut my trigger weight in half easily.

You can turn them into tack drivers or tweak them just a bit and get good accuracy gains.

EDIT:: Here's a pic of mine.

Here's a list of the mods I've done on mine.

Tapco T6 stock in OD Green
    Weaver 10/22 "See Thru" rings
    Bushnell 4-12x40 AO scope
    VQ bolt buffer
    VQ auto bolt release
    VQ extended mag release
    VQ target hammer and springs
    muzzle brake
    Shooters Ridge bi-pod
    Steel Lips 25 round mag

I think a hammer and trigger swap is in order first thing on a 10/22. That's one of the cheaper mods and the parts are very easy to install. I have Volquartzen in mine.

I built my tack driver gradually. I started with a hammer and trigger then I added an Adams & Bennet barrel and a Choate dragonov stock. Finally I put on a BSA 6-18X scope.

The Adams & Bennet barrel really loves Winchester Super X ammo. With a bipod off the bench it'll put every round through the same hole at 50 yards if I do my part.

Its perfect. It breaks at 12 ounces but its not original. It's an adjustable Volquartsen. Only the receiver is original. Barrel is Green Mountain bull, Boyd's stock and everything else Volquartsen. Scope is Simmons 8-24 x 40 mildot. Mine shoots best with Wolf Match.
