Re: Having trouble dating a Remington 700
The easiest way that I know of is to just call remington. You tell them what the seriel is, and they'll tell you when it was made. I'll look around for some numbers that might help you out. Some of us also might be to help if you tell us about some of the features, model, if it has sights on it or not, grade of wood, if the bolt stays locked when the safety is on or not, etc. We don't be be able to date it exactly but might be able to give you a small idea.
Edit:
I found a website that says there is another way to find the age of a Remington (not necessarily a 700) without calling them and that is the barrel markings on the barrel. Here's a link to the article and maybe it'll help you out.

Re: Having trouble dating a Remington 700
Its a 700 ADL 30.06. wood has checkering at the pistol grip and forearm but its not fancy. monte carlo style stock. Has a serial number. Metal butt plate. Iron sights and the rear has an elevator. bolt locks when its on safe. the saftey is on the right side at the rear of the bolt and its about 1/2 inch tall. the bolt is not jeweled. it also has 2 screws on the left side of the receiver towards the back about at the stock line. I know that might be alot of usless info but I know sometime the littlest thing can date a gun.
I called remington 4 times today but I was on hold for about 15 mins each time. I have a guy who wants this gun really bad. Hes making a M40 sniper. Hes got an original Unertal scope marked U.S.M.C. and everything but no gun.
He wants a gun that older to match the scope. So any help is appreciated. thanks.14OO N. HERMITAGE RD, HERMITAGE,PA 724-962-1776......STOP BY AND SEE US SOME TIME
